MVNO Xfinity Mobile Leads Comcast's Shift Comcast is shifting its strategic focus, elevating wireless services to its top operational priority as the company navigates a changing broadband market. Steve Croney, the recently appointed CEO of Comcast's Connectivity & Platforms unit, emphasized this change in direction during the recent MoffettNathanson Media, Internet & Communications Conference, declaring wireless as the company's primary focus moving forward. When major US cable operators first introduced mobile services nearly a decade ago, the offering was primarily viewed as a defensive tactic designed to protect core broadband subscriptions and reduce #CustomerChurn. While that strategy successfully helped stabilize the customer base, a combination of intense market competition, pricing pressures, and a stagnant housing market has recently led to industry-wide broadband subscriber losses. In response, Comcast is shifting from a defensive posture to an offensive strategy centered on product convergence. The company's wireless portfolio is anchored by Xfinity Mobile, which operates as a mobile virtual network operator (#MVNO). The service added a record 435,000 connections in the first quarter of 2026, bringing its total to 9.73 million. The infrastructure supporting this growth relies heavily on Comcast's extensive #WiFi network, which carries approximately 90% of Xfinity Mobile's data traffic. Additionally, Comcast has deployed Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) spectrum across multiple markets to offload traffic in high-usage areas. Comcast is also refining its mobile service tiers to focus on higher value offerings. After discontinuing its pay-by-the-gigabyte options, the company transitioned to an all-unlimited lineup. A premium tier introduced last year, featuring 4K streaming and frequent device upgrades, achieved a 30% adoption rate among new customers, exceeding internal projections. The strategy has since been streamlined into two main plans, Mobile Plus and Mobile Select. The premium Mobile Plus plan includes built-in device protection, a feature Comcast expects will drive strong adoption rates. A significant portion of recent customer acquisition was driven by a promotional offer providing a free mobile line for one year to both new and current subscribers. Addressing industry questions regarding customer retention after the promotional period, Croney stated that a substantial majority of early promotional customers have transitioned to paid plans, with many opting to add additional lines. Will the Ball Finally Swing Toward LEO and Fixed Wireless? It’s hard not to feel disheartened as a technologist watching decisions about broadband infrastructure continue to be shaped more by politics than long-term science and physics. Once again, it feels like we’re kicking the can down the road. Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, I remember how energized we were by the promise of Fixed Wireless (FW) and satellite technologies. These solutions opened up the internet to communities that had been left behind—places where traditional wireline simply wasn’t feasible. We believed in building accessible networks, even if they weren’t perfect. And we knew there was a role for satellite and wireless in closing the digital divide. Now, with the emergence of LEO (Low Earth Orbit) constellations and next-gen FW, there’s a renewed opportunity—but also a reminder: these ecosystems are complementary, not competitive, to fiber and other high-capacity, high-reliability networks. LEO and FW have their place, especially in hard-to-reach areas, but they are not long-term substitutes for the kind of infrastructure that supports ever-growing demands for bandwidth, latency-sensitive applications, and overall network stability. As technologists, we understand the physics. We understand the scalability requirements. What’s disheartening is when that knowledge is sidelined for political convenience or temporary wins. The decisions made today need to reflect the needs of the next decade, not just the next election cycle. This has got to change!!!

With UScellular and Cox disappearing, this marks the end of medium-sized carriers -- wireless and cable. Similar trend for telcos also, with Verizon buying Frontier as AT&T buys key Lumen assets. This interview accurately represents the hearts of the people involved in the New Mexico Fiber Network. These efforts will improve all of New Mexico, not just the most populous areas. While fiber connections to residential areas increase the value of properties, NMFN increases the opportunities for all of New Mexico.

AT&T completed the acquisition of the Lumen consumer FTTH division and Verizon completed the acquisition of Frontier. Next up is Cox+Charter. A lot of consolidation in the ISP space. Lot of changes in the cellco space as well. The big keep getting bigger - not better, just bigger - with hardly any anti-trust scrutiny. AT&T has far more market power now than it did in 1982 (they were divested in 1984).
