Tech recruiters confess what 'open to work' signals. I sat down with hiring managers across the sector to determine exactly how this green banner impacts candidate perception. The data reveals a distinct psychological split that most candidates completely miss when they optimize their profiles. It comes down to leverage. When senior leaders see the banner on entry-level or mid-level profiles, it signals availability and eagerness to engage. It removes friction from the outreach process. Recruiters have strict quotas to fill. They prioritize candidates who clearly signal they want to be found. However, the signal inverts at the executive level. For VP and C-suite roles, explicit availability often triggers unconscious bias regarding desirability. The market assumes top-tier talent is always employed or quietly poached. High-performance hiring managers interpret the banner not as availability, but as a lack of demand for your skillset. This is the hidden tax of perceived abundance. You must align your signaling strategy with your seniority level. If you are building your career, use the banner to reduce friction. If you are established, remove it. Force recruiters to work to acquire you. Scarcity drives value in negotiations. Control the narrative before they ever read your resume.

This LinkedIn Mistake Is Costing You Opportunities Your LinkedIn headline is not just a job title. It’s your first impression, and your best chance to show up in searches. Yet I still see things like: “Aspiring Cybersecurity Professional | Job Seeker | Open to Work” The problem? Hiring managers don’t search for “aspiring.” They search for roles like: “Security Analyst” “GRC Associate” “SOC Level 1” If your headline doesn’t reflect what you can do (and what recruiters are looking for), you’re already invisible. Fix it. Speak the language of the roles you want. Now, about your About section… It’s not a place for your life story. It’s a place to position yourself with clarity and value. Here’s a better structure: ✅ Who you are (your positioning) ✅ What you’ve done (skills, tools, impact, projects) ✅ What you’re looking for (target role or domain) Then go one step further: Refine your Skills section. Stop adding random buzzwords. Instead, add skills recruiters actually search for. See examples in the slides. You see "over 100 people clicked apply" and start counting yourself out. I see those same 100 applicants differently. After reviewing thousands of applications for senior & principal cloud roles, here's what those numbers look like to me: Out of 100 people who click "apply," less than 10 are actually qualified for the role. Let me break down what I typically see: 60-65 applicants don't meet the basic qualifications. Wrong level, wrong experience, wrong skill set. 15-20 applicants meet some qualifications but lack experience or specialization. Maybe they have 3 years of experience for a role requiring 10+. Or they've worked in the tech industry but not cloud specifically. 5-10 applicants submit a copy of their LinkedIn profile with no information on it. 5-10 applicants are qualified on paper and are moved to the next step. 5 or fewer get interviews. Most of those applications don’t move forward, but they are creating noise in the process. When you see triple-digit application numbers, you're competing against 100 people for attention, and competing against maybe 10 qualified applicants. Here's my recommendation: 1️⃣ Don't apply to roles where you're guessing. Ask yourself, am I actually qualified for this role? Does my resume reflect my qualifications and match what’s in the job description? If you meet 80% of the criteria, go for it. 2️⃣ Submitting an application should only be a part of your job search strategy, not all of it. Individuals landing jobs are networking strategically, optimizing their LinkedIn presence, and developing in-demand skills. Every time I look at the job market I'm filled with dread at all the 'remote' roles which require 2x week travel into the office, and the 'hybrid' roles needing you on-site 3+ days a week. We have a 3.5 million global shortage in cybersecurity talent, yet women represent just 25% of our current workforce - a figure that's declining as return-to-office mandates roll out. This isn't JUST a diversity issue. When workplace policies disproportionately impact women and carers, we're losing the very people who bring different perspectives our industry desperately needs. Carers are disproportionately affected by rigid RTO. Hiring is expensive, and 40% of cyber workforce would quit over RTO policies (link to study in comments). RTO done badly can lead to much more risk, slower responses and negative work culture. I’ve spent over a decade in Cybersecurity and almost half of this has been spent in remote roles. I felt like I cracked the best of both worlds with remote working and parenting. But now that the trends are changing, I can't help but feel like we're moving back in terms of inclusion. Freedom that carers and parents had to manage their time, flow state, and contribute has changed to 'be there or be forgotten' attitudes. So I asked - is there another way? Priyanka Chatterjee shed light on her perspective as an employer and a diversity advocate. Need for office culture being a 'need' only when there's a degradation of trust between all parties. Helen Ridley spoke to the challenges navigating parenthood, and caring for ageing parents as a family. Careers that allow for flexible working eases a lot more pressure for the average working adult (men included) who need to balance being there for children as well as parents. Aditi L. shared some techniques she's found success in, in terms of finding a balance. - Team focus days (rather than mandated days in the office), as well as - Project- focused days (where teams come in to work on a problem) Bottom line is that legally, all employees who are carers/parents are entitled to request flexible work in the UK. This has to be considered and worked out with employer. Proposing trial periods, and building trust with your manager and colleagues are key to a successful remote working culture. Recruiters aren’t just looking for people who can code. They’re looking for people who can solve problems and think critically. So here’s how you position yourself, even with zero IT experience: 1. Highlight transferable skills. If you’ve worked in finance, law, or operations. you already understand risk, compliance, and analysis. That’s cybersecurity gold. 2. Get familiar with the language. You don’t need to be an expert overnight. Start learning common terms GRC, risk assessment, security awareness. 3. Show curiosity and initiative. Take free courses, earn entry-level certs, join cybersecurity communities. Recruiters love people who take action. 4. Tell your story clearly. Instead of “I’m switching to cybersecurity,” say “I’m building a career in protecting organizations from risk, using my background in finance to strengthen compliance and strategy.” You don’t need to start over you just need to reposition what you already know. Dear Recruiters, I have applied to numerous companies but have yet to receive feedback from hiring teams. Constructive reasons for rejection would help candidates identify areas for improvement. Not everyone excels in interviews, yet many demonstrate exceptional abilities in actual work. Skills, dedication, and hard work often extend far beyond what can be conveyed in a single conversation. A brief interview should not define a candidate’s full potential—real talent is best measured through performance and results, not just verbal presentation.

Any bootcamp that promises to teach you cybersecurity within 6 months with no experience is a scam and cybersecurity is not an entry level position. Influencers are ruining this career by flooding market with people who have completed bootcamps who have no idea what they are doing because of promises of a 6 figure remote job. Learn IT administration and then learn cybersecurity. You can’t secure something you don’t know how to deploy and administer. #informationsecurity #cybersecurity

🔐 Monday: The Cybersecurity Engineer’s Ritual (a.k.a. “coffee + controlled panic”) How I start the week: 1. ☕ Brew coffee strong enough to qualify as MFA. 2. 🚨 Open the SIEM and say, “Surely it’s quiet today.” (It never is.) 3. 🧹 Triage alerts: false positives first, real fires second. 4. 🧩 Patch check: what’s exploitable, what’s internet-facing, what’s “we’ll do it Friday” (no we won’t). 5. 🎣 Phishing review: if it says “URGENT” + “kindly” + “invoice,” it’s basically malware in a trench coat. 6. 🔒 Quick sanity sweep: MFA coverage, admin accounts, exposed services, failed logins, weird geo logins. 7. 💾 Verify backups and a restore point—because “we have backups” means nothing until you test a restore. Actual facts (the boring-but-important part): • A lot of incidents start with familiar paths: phishing, weak/reused creds, unpatched systems, or misconfigurations. • Reducing risk tends to be “boring excellence”: patching, least privilege, MFA, solid logging, and tested recovery. A lot of people think you can’t get hired unless you have a referral. I understand why that idea is everywhere. But after working in recruiting for more than a decade, I can tell you it’s not actually how most hiring happens. A large percentage of hires still come from direct applications. Not referrals. Not recruiters reaching out. Just someone applying to the role. So why does it feel so hard? From what I see reviewing applications, most people aren’t doing anything wrong in terms of effort. The problem is usually where that effort goes. Three things show up again and again. First, people apply to everything. If your background doesn’t clearly match the role, recruiters usually move on quickly. It’s not personal. It’s just the reality of how many applications come in. You’re far better off focusing on roles where the fit is obvious (think same industry and tech stack for example). Second, people spend all their time on the resume. Resumes matter, but they rarely tell the whole story. What often makes someone stand out are the answers they write in the application. Some applications will include a few questions for you to answer. When someone takes the time to explain how they approached a problem or what they actually did in a situation, it gives much more context than a single line on a resume. Those answers often tell me far more than the resume itself. Third, people rush the application. When you’re applying to a lot of roles, it’s easy to move quickly just to get it done. But the applications that stand out are usually the ones where the candidate slowed down and put a bit more thought into it. Most job search advice online focuses on tactics and shortcuts. But in reality it’s much simpler (& harder) than that. Apply to roles that genuinely match your background. Take the time to answer the application questions properly. Show that you actually care about the role. It’s not complicated advice. But after reviewing thousands of applications, I can tell you it makes a real difference.

There are currently 5400 recruiter roles posted in the US. Just 804 of those are remote. When I do a search on LinkedIn Recruiter for recruiters who are "open to work" in the US, I find 170k recruiters. 31 open to work recruiters for every vacancy. 211 open to work recruiters for every remote vacancy. And not every person applying for jobs right now has listed themselves as “open to work”. This pattern of 10+ open-to-work candidates for every vacancy holds true for any profession. 29,400 accounting roles, 3700 of which are remote, and 280k accountants who are "open to work". 18,600 account executive roles, 5900 of which are remote, 340k account executives who are open to work. 12,500 marketing manager roles, 2800 of which are remote, 220k marketing managers who are open to work. The reason you aren’t landing interviews and offers isn’t because of AI screening you out, because your resume needs to be written yet again, or because companies are posting ghost jobs. It’s because there are a whole bunch of people competing for the same job as you, and that means companies can be super picky because they know they can hold out for the perfect fit. I know many are thinking "with so many open to work candidates, why are companies taking weeks or months to fill roles?" And the answer is because they don't have to. When you go shopping for a sweater, do you buy the first sweater you see? Or do you look through all the options and then pick your favorite? And do you pick out a sweater more quickly at a store with 3 styles of sweater, or at a store with 300 styles? When there are more options, we become pickier (and studies back this up). You can decide what to do with this info: - Some may want to shift from focusing on remote work, to on site work. - Some may consider shifting to other industries or fields with more favorable ratios. - Some people may loosen their expectations in other ways with more flexibility on level, benefits, compensation, etc. - Some may decide to take a temp job or start their own business to offset the lengthy search. - And some may hold firm on what they want and stick with it until they get it, even if that takes years. There's no right or wrong answer, but I think it's important to understand the market, and how competitive you are within the market, and make data-informed decisions so hopefully this helps you to do that!

In 2026, competency alone isn’t enough to land a cybersecurity job. It’s no longer just about what you know. It’s about who can see it. When 500+ people apply to the same role, hitting “Apply Now” doesn’t make you stand out—it makes you invisible. And the truth is, many of those applicants are competent. - They have training. - They have certifications. - They have projects. So what’s the differentiator? Visibility. This is why the hidden job market matters more than ever. A significant number of cyber roles are filled: - before they’re posted - through referrals - through conversations, not applications You don’t access those opportunities by submitting resumes into a black hole. You access them by: - showing proof of your skills publicly - being visible in the right spaces - building relationships before a job opens This doesn’t mean becoming a LinkedIn influencer or spamming people in their DM's. It means being strategically visible. Because when employers already recognize your name, your resume isn’t fighting against 500 others—it’s being pulled from the top of the stack. Competency gets you qualified. Visibility gets you chosen. And in today’s market, you need both. If you’re still relying only on applications, it’s time for a different strategy.

More fake recruiter scams posing as legit companies/people. Anyone else been getting these? They flatter your LinkedIn, dangle vague jobs, grab your resume, then trash it as "outdated" with a bogus ATS score (e.g., 23/100). Red Flags: No chat on clients or interviews—just straight to hawking paid resume fixes via a "colleague" on WhatsApp/freelance. Real recruiters earn from placements, not upsells. Sketchy bits: Gmail instead of company email, and pressure like "market's hot, move quick." Red Flags: - No Job Focus: Legit recruiters discuss client needs, your fit, or next steps like interviews. Here, they'll skip straight to resume critique after getting your CV.  - Fabricated Score and Jargon: The "23/100" ATS score and "2026 benchmarks" sound authoritative ..but is made up—real ATS systems don't score resumes this way, and frameworks like ELITE/LPS aren't standard requirements.  - Pressure and Referral: Urging "timely steps" in a "competitive market" creates urgency. Referring to a "friend" via WhatsApp (informal, hard to trace) is not how professionals operate; real recruiters don't profit from resume services.  - Generic Roles: The jobs listed are vague and not tied to specific clients, which is unusual for executive search firms.  - Grammar/Style Issues: Minor oddities like "I’ve taken a full moment" or missing punctuation (e.g., "position you as more than a tester you’re someone") hint at non-native or hasty writing.
