What’s the worst “one solution fits all” recommendation you’ve seen, and what did it break? Reply in the comments If your vendor has one solution for every problem, run. If every conversation ends with the same box, the problem was never truly understood. Here’s why that matters. In live production and broadcast, context is everything. A live venue is not a fixed facility. A fixed facility is not a remote or at-home workflow. Yet “one-size-fits-all” recommendations routinely ignore environmental factors, reliability expectations, latency and synchronization requirements, operational control, and, most critically, the existing infrastructure. After decades in live production and broadcast engineering, a few truths have proven consistent: • Assumptions fail before products do. • Systems succeed when you start with requirements, not SKUs. • Constraints matter more than spec sheets. • You should design for resilience, not best-case demos. • Always ask: Who’s truly operating and supporting this solution when something goes wrong at show time? More than once, our team at VidOvation - Moving Video Forward has been called in after a “simple, all-in-one solution” performed flawlessly in the lab but fell apart in the field, in unpredictable RF conditions. Unexpected latency. No meaningful control, visibility, or recovery path. This isn’t just theory, it’s lived experience. The hardware didn’t change. The environment did. Don’t be fooled when your wireless microwave or cellular link works in an empty stadium. Design and test the systems for the stadium with 80,000 fans. That’s usually when the real system design starts. We never start with a product. We start with the problem, then engineer the right solution using the right tools and partners, tailored to that specific environment and budget. That’s how real, lasting value is created.

A Verizon rep can tell you a phone won’t activate… and still be wrong. 📱 This came up with one of our clients a while back, and it’s a perfect example of how the process matters just as much as the data itself. They had several e-commerce customers call into Verizon, only to be told that the devices they had just purchased couldn’t be activated. Naturally, that creates concern… returns… and a lot of unnecessary friction. The interesting part? The phones were completely fine. Here’s what was actually happening - Verizon doesn’t rely on a single method when checking an IMEI. There are two different layers, and they answer two very different questions. The first looks at the Initial Activation Policy — essentially what the device was originally intended for when it left the manufacturer. If that result shows something like “US Reseller Flex Policy,” it can trigger a red flag, even if the phone is perfectly usable today. The second method pushes the device through a mock activation process, checking what’s known as the Next Tether Policy. This reflects the device’s current status — in other words, whether it can actually be activated right now. Where things went sideways - In this case, the Verizon reps were only using the first check, so they were seeing a “Red X”… and stopping there. Had they gone one step further and used the second method, the devices would have passed without issue. Why this matters - This kind of situation leads to: - Customers being told devices won’t work when they actually will - Good inventory being questioned - Unnecessary returns and lost confidence All because the wrong lens was used to evaluate the device. The takeaway - Sometimes wireless wisdom is understanding that where a phone started isn’t nearly as important as where it stands today. Municipal broadband systems have a real advantage over the big telecoms: you’re part of the community and you’re not going anywhere. Your customers aren’t just account numbers; they’re your neighbors, friends, and family. The big providers may come in and overbuild, fueled by “free money” and intro pricing that’s unrealistically cheap just to drive quick sign-ups. But we all know how that story goes: give it a year, and the price changes when someone in a boardroom decides the numbers need to go up. If you stay humble, keep delivering high-quality experience, and pricing your service fairly, customers will continue to choose you. Many of the ones who jump at the discount will come back once they feel the difference in reliability and support. Keep leaning into what makes you different: local commitment, consistent quality, and real customer care. AT&T completed the acquisition of the Lumen consumer FTTH division and Verizon completed the acquisition of Frontier. Next up is Cox+Charter. A lot of consolidation in the ISP space. Lot of changes in the cellco space as well. The big keep getting bigger - not better, just bigger - with hardly any anti-trust scrutiny. AT&T has far more market power now than it did in 1982 (they were divested in 1984).
