Wounded Warrior Project and Veteran Career Mentoring

    - Present 13 years 3 months

In April of 2013, during a meeting with the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), I suggested creating a career mentor program, pairing a veteran with an established professional to serve as career coach – a one-on-one approach – to support the veteran throughout the job search process. I started the program with four Wounded Warrior mentees – Andrew, Chris, Jeremiah and Steve – assisting them with their job search strategy, which included identifying their skills and targeting jobs; assembling a…

In April of 2013, during a meeting with the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), I suggested creating a career mentor program, pairing a veteran with an established professional to serve as career coach – a one-on-one approach – to support the veteran throughout the job search process. I started the program with four Wounded Warrior mentees – Andrew, Chris, Jeremiah and Steve – assisting them with their job search strategy, which included identifying their skills and targeting jobs; assembling a resume that best positioned their expertise; targeting companies; identifying key messages; interviewing and following up; networking; and, listening and encouraging.

Within eight weeks, three of my mentees received job offers. During a conversation with Dana Perino, a friend who is a co-host of the Fox News show The Five, and a former White House Press Secretary, I mentioned that I’d received a great message from one of my Wounded Warriors – he’d received a job offer and was elated. This led to a news piece on the July 4, 2013, episode of The Five focused on the career-coaching/mentoring program. I shared the video with my network of colleagues and friends – and recruited about 40 additional mentors. Approximately two thirds of the veterans we worked with found employment. Subsequently, we launched a program with leaders from my company at the time – and achieved similar success. The Wounded Warrior/veteran career mentor program has helped more than 75 veterans so far.

While I’m proud of the success to date helping Wounded Warriors and veterans find employment when their military service is complete, there is more work to be done. A one-on-one mentor program, pairing a veteran with an established professional to serve as a career coach – supporting the veteran throughout the job search process – has proven to be effective. And with more than 700,000 unemployed veterans in the U.S., time is of the essence in solving this problem affecting our nation.
