The July Jobs Report has just been released, and the numbers tell an important story for those of us in professional staffing and placements. While the overall jobs report showed a slowdown, with only 73,000 nonfarm payroll jobs added, a closer look reveals a critical trend: the Professional and Business Services sector lost 14,000 jobs. This follows a persistent downward trend in the sector, with temporary help services cutting another 4,400 positions. For our clients and candidates, this data is a key signal. It shows that employers are becoming more cautious and are slowing their hiring. The significant downward revisions for May and June (a combined 258,000 fewer jobs) underscore that this cooling has been underway for a while. What this means for us in the professional placement space is an opportunity to be a strategic partner. As hiring managers face this increased uncertainty, they will be looking for solutions that offer flexibility and expertise. The larger recruiting firms working to fill your controller role? They probably have 4 or 5 other controller roles they’re working on at the same time. So that ideal controller who you’d love to hire? Their resume is getting sent to half a dozen other companies too. (Sometimes, whether they know it or not) And the first one who makes an offer will get to hire them. One reason why working with a big firm doesn’t always mean you get more or better candidates… Often, it actually means you get less. But when I work on a controller role? I’m working on YOUR controller role. Not pitching 4-5 opportunities for them to consider at the same time. Or throwing spaghetti at the wall just to see if I can place someone. I’m spending all my time and resources on that role until it’s filled. It's intentional.

🔥 Wednesday Thought 🔥 🔑 Staffing isn’t just about filling seats — it’s about strategy. Over the years in New York’s Finance & Accounting market, I’ve seen a few concepts make or break a hiring process. Here are the ones that matter most right now: 1️⃣ Clarity beats volume When specs are vague, searches drag. A client recently opened a “Senior Accountant” role but wasn’t clear if they needed technical accounting vs. operational support. After weeks of noise, we tightened the scope — and filled the role in 2 weeks with a candidate who’s still thriving today. 2️⃣ Speed wins talent ⏳ NYC candidates don’t wait. I’ve watched A+ talent accept competing offers simply because one process moved faster. One startup lost their top Controller choice after a 5-round interview process dragged on. Their competitor — who ran 3 efficient steps — won the hire. 3️⃣ Compensation calibration is critical 💰 The market shifts quickly. A recent Assistant Controller search stalled because offers came in $10–15k below market. Once we recalibrated comp using real-time NYC data, the role was filled within days. Under-scoping comp is more costly than paying market. 4️⃣ Networks > Job Boards 🤝 Some of the best hires I’ve made never applied online. They were referrals, passive candidates, or people I’d built relationships with over years.
