Large enterprises face a strategic dilemma: should they transition to on-premise S/4HANA or migrate to the private cloud via Azure, AWS, or GCP? While SAP and hyperscalers tout cloud as the inevitable future, does the business case truly add up? Let me share my view: The Case for On-Premise S/4HANA ✅ Data Sovereignty & Control: Mission-critical applications remain in-house, ensuring compliance with regulatory and security needs. ✅ Cost Predictability: No recurring cloud subscription fees; costs remain within IT CapEx budgets. ✅ Customization & Performance: High flexibility for industry-specific configurations without cloud provider restrictions. ❌ Infrastructure Costs: Requires substantial upfront investments in hardware, maintenance, and specialized SAP Basis teams. ❌ Scalability Challenges: Upgrading and scaling require additional CapEx and planning, making agility an issue. ❌ Talent Shortages: Finding skilled SAP Basis and ABAP developers is becoming increasingly difficult. The Private Cloud Argument (Azure, AWS, GCP) ✅ Elastic Scalability: Enterprises can scale computing power on demand, avoiding over-provisioning. ✅ Lower IT Overhead: Managed cloud services reduce dependency on in-house SAP technical teams. ✅ Security & Compliance: Hyperscalers offer best-in-class security, but at an additional cost. ✅ Future-Proofing with AI & Analytics: Easier access to cloud-native AI/ML services for real-time analytics. ❌ Lock-in Risk: Enterprises become dependent on SAP’s RISE program and cloud hyperscalers, limiting flexibility. ❌ Cost Overruns: While OpEx pricing seems attractive, long-term cloud costs often exceed on-premise investments. ❌ Performance Variability: Shared cloud environments can lead to latency and unpredictable performance. ❌ Complex Migrations: Moving from ECC to S/4HANA Cloud is not a simple lift-and-shift; extensive reimplementation is needed. Hidden Costs & the SAP-Cloud Hyperscaler Play • SAP Benefits the Most: The cloud-first push enables SAP to enforce RISE contracts, generating steady recurring revenue. • Licensing & Exit Costs: SAP’s licensing structure and vendor lock-in make moving out of RISE costly. • Unclear ROI Timelines: Cloud cost advantages materialize only after years, making the short-term financial case weak. Therefore, No Clear Winner, but a Cloud-First Hype remains • For heavily customized industries (e.g., manufacturing, defense, pharma), on-premise remains relevant. • For fast-scaling, digital-first firms, private cloud offers agility but at a price. • Hybrid cloud models with selective cloud adoption (e.g., AI, analytics, disaster recovery) may be the best compromise.

The Hidden Cost of Disconnection: Why Integration Is Your Real Competitive Edge Integration. It’s a word we hear constantly - but how often do we stop to ask what it really means? It’s been the word of the week here, from ERP migrations to corporate strategy, which prompted me to reflect on what it is that we actually aspire to. For many, integration is purely a planning principle. But in reality, it’s not just about connecting systems or aligning teams on paper; it’s about ensuring that people, processes, data, and technology function as a cohesive whole. A different way of working. 1️⃣ PEOPLE: Moving from Collaboration to Shared Ownership As Peter Senge writes in The Fifth Discipline, "A shared vision is not an idea. It is a force in people’s hearts." Integration is often mistaken for collaboration. Unless people genuinely believe in an integrated way of working, no technology or process will make it happen. This means: 👉 Breaking down function-specific incentives that encourage siloed thinking. 👉 Structuring teams around end-to-end value delivery, not departmental goals. 👉 Encouraging multi-disciplinary leadership where business and IT leaders drive transformation together. 2️⃣ PROCESS: Seamlessness Over Efficiency Businesses love efficiency. But integration isn’t just about making individual processes faster - it’s about making them work together seamlessly. This is critical as automation and AI take on more operational roles. If underlying processes aren’t designed to work together, technology will only amplify the inefficiencies. 3️⃣ DATA: From Ownership to Accessibility McKinsey research shows that companies that effectively integrate data across functions see up to a 20% increase in operational efficiency and a 15-25% improvement in customer satisfaction. A truly integrated business considers data a shared asset, and is: 👉 Consistent across functions and tools. 👉 Accessible to those who need it for decision-making. 👉 Contextualized, so it’s not just raw numbers but meaningful intelligence. 4️⃣ SYSTEMS: Beyond Interoperability to Intelligence True integration isn’t just about interfacing systems; it’s about creating intelligence: 👉 Moving beyond data exchange to real-time decision support. 👉 Ensuring systems enhance human decision-making rather than just automating tasks. 👉 Designing IT architecture that is adaptive and modular, not rigid and siloed. Gartner predicts that by 2026, companies that treat integration as a strategic capability rather than a technical challenge will outperform their competitors by 50% in operational agility. SO… the next time you hear the word “integration”, ask yourself: ❓ Are our people truly working as one, or just co-existing in silos? ❓ Are our processes designed for seamless flow, or just optimised in isolation? ❓ Is our data connected and accessible, or locked away in departmental vaults? ❓ Are our systems empowering decision-making, or just exchanging information?
