For emerging venture studios, there are only 2 ways to raise from LPs: 1. Either you’ve previously had $10M+ or $100M+ exits—as founders, you can raise for your studio with just your deck on day 1 2. Or you bootstrap & raise FFF for the first 1-2 years. Here is how you'll convince LPs in 2 years: – Build 4 companies in a very lean format (AI + overseas talent), put $150K per company for 20% of equity (rest – to founders), lead each to first revenue, and raise pre-seed rounds at a $4M pre-money val. – On the 1st slide of your deck, compare the VC TVPI benchmark for the same vintage year you started and compare it to yours. If you raised for 3 of your companies, you'll get 20% * $4M * 3 / $600K = 3x TVPI. If one of your companies raised a seed at a $10M val, you'll have 5x+ TVPI. The slide you’ll show to LPs who have invested in VC funds in recent years: VC TVPI₂₀₂ₓ: ~1.5x  Your Studio TVPI₂₀₂ₓ: ~4x TVPI This is the best argument for LPs you can show in 2 years. I didn’t say everyone can build 4 companies in 2 years and raise external funding for 3 of them. But the majority of experienced founders who have built several companies before, raised capital previously, and have 10+ years in the tech industry can do this. I have been thinking about funding cycles a lot lately. Peeq Pro is preparing for its Series A raise, and so I am dwelling on funding. But, I have also had a significant number of early stage companies ask for funding help lately also. More importantly, multiple people in Nebrask have asked me about how the funding ecosystem works. So, to that end, I went back to look at something I wrote about five years ago regarding funding cylces and how cities should think about funding in their ecosystems. Think of companies receiving venture funding as vintages or cohorts. If you want to grow your ecosystem, the cohort is not a single accelerator class or single year of seed funding, it should be thought of more as seven years. This seven year cycle will involve multiple rounds of financing, but the city needs to have the structure to support each stage of financing with connections, capital, and consistency. I have worked in communities that increased seed funding with no connections or plan to help companies find A round funders. I have also worked in communities where money has flooded the $1-5 million tranche but no early stage risk-based capital. A balance and progression is necessary. At each round you will ned 1-2x the total amount of capital for 1/4-1/3x the number of investments. So, a company like Peeq might raise 200k - 1m - 5m. In Nebraska that might mean 200k x 100 startups every year - $20m, 1m x35 startups is $35m, $5m x 10 startups - $50m. So the amount of dollars needed for support goes up even as deal number goes down. As a city/region, you should be thinking about what that structure looks like - maybe Omaha wants 100 new startups per year...that means EVERY YEAR it has to have (ACCESS TO) $20m (for starts) + $35m for Early Stage + $50m for Series A. In Nebraska, the prototype grant from Nebraska DED has dramatically helped with the starts number (roughly $5m plus match of $2.5...this gets us to about 40 starts a year in Nebraska with a clear financial path), and with companies like Grit Road Partners, Invest Nebraska, and MOVE Venture Capital, there is growing access to both capital and connections to partner capital in other states. In other words, Nebraska has created a pathway that gets halfway to 100 startups a year. While there is no actual meaning, ~100 startups a year would mark a clear, next evolution of the Omaha/Lincoln ecosystem. This is true for all but a handful of startup ecosystems. Other cities can identify similar steps on their journey by simply mapping their capital availability into the three clumps listed above. DTC is fragile. Retail is durable. Here’s the difference: DTC lives and dies on paid media. Your CPA scales as fast as your revenue - and usually faster. That’s not a business model, that’s a treadmill. Retail is slower to unlock but infinitely harder to disrupt. Shelves don’t fluctuate with CPM swings. Buyers don’t ghost you because Meta tweaked an algorithm. Yes, retail takes more muscle. More execution. More patience. But that difficulty is exactly what makes it defensible. DTC is the on-ramp. David's Bridal is the first real-world retail AI use case I've personally seen with the potential to transform the entire business. If they pull this off, it will truly be an AI-led "retail resurrection". Several implications for retail and technology occurred to me while writing this story: 1. Physical retail's data advantage is undervalued. While conventional wisdom suggests e-commerce has the data advantage, David's Bridal demonstrates that traditional retailers possess an underutilized asset: intimate, high-intent, in-person customer interactions. Physical retailers who can capture and leverage this high-quality data may actually have an advantage over pure digital players in certain personalization scenarios. 2. AI transformation requires rethinking knowledge, not just processes: Most companies approach AI by asking "how can we automate what we do?" David's took the opposite approach, first asking "what do we know that others don't?" By systematically extracting internal expertise about how dress details, flowers, and venue preferences relate to wedding themes, they transformed tacit employee knowledge into a structured asset. The greatest AI opportunities may lie in codifying institutional wisdom rather than merely automating workflows. 3. The most valuable AI applications address emotional needs, not just functional ones: The core insight driving Pearl Planner wasn't efficiency but empathy - addressing the bride's need to be heard and understood in a process where "everybody has an opinion." The most transformative AI may be that which fulfills emotional needs traditional businesses have never adequately addressed. 4. Knowledge graphs may be better suited than vanilla RAG for emotional intelligence: The technical choice of knowledge graphs over RAG wasn't merely a performance decision but fundamentally about the system's ability to understand nuance and context in human preferences. 5. Business model transformation, not just technology transformation, is the key to retail survival. The retail apocalypse may be less about physical versus digital and more about companies that can reimagine their core business model versus those that merely optimize the existing one. 6. Traditional retailers may be better positioned for AI transformation than tech companies expect. This challenges the notion that legacy companies can't compete with tech-native firms in AI implementation. A Harsh Truth: consumer products that lead with tech are killing their adoption. Founders are racing to build with crypto and AI, as they should. These are generational platforms that open up entirely new design spaces. But here’s the part no one wants to say out loud: The more you emphasize your technology, the more consumers tune out. That language? It’s for founders. It’s for investors. It’s not how mainstream consumers think. It’s not what mainstream consumers crave, desire or aspire. Mainstream users don’t care that your product is decentralized, model-optimized, or cryptographically secure. They care that it works instantly. That it feels intuitive. That it gives them something valuable without effort or confusion. If AI helps me get to a better outcome 10x faster and smarter, I’ll use it again. If crypto infra gives me ownership, portability, or financial upside without me needing to understand how, I’ll stay. But the second you force me to engage with the tech itself, you’ve lost me. The tech stack isn’t the product. It’s the enabler. The best experiences make it invisible. The brands that win will be the ones that translate advanced capabilities into emotionally resonant outcomes: - “Your trip, booked in 30 seconds.” - “Rewards that move with you.” - “A coach that knows you better than your best friend.” No mention of AI. No mention of crypto. Just magic. So yes, build with the most advanced models. Go onchain. But don’t expect consumers to clap for your architecture. They’ll clap when it feels like the future. Not when you tell them it is.
