  • Serendipity: Deals on Experiences Catered to Users’ Preferences

Serendipity is a coupon aggregator that presents users with deals on experiences. Numerous coupon related services exist such as Groupon with a roughly two billion dollar market capitalization, Coupons.com (Quotient Technology) trading at roughly a one billion dollars market capitalization, and RetailMeNot with a $500 million market capitalization. The market for providing retail discounts is large; however, many of these services falter by presenting users with tens of seemingly unrelated coupons at once, failing to capture users’ preferences. They also overwhelm users by displaying myriad options at once. We plan to enter the coupon market, differentiating ourselves from the aforementioned coupon aggregators by using cloud technologies and collaborative filtering to offer our users high-quality deals that are catered to their individual preferences. We use online learning on the user's’ transaction histories as well as their selection history via our service to show them relevant deals, one-at-a-time. If a user does not accept the current deal and chooses to proceed to the next, the user will not be able to return to the same deal again. Thus, we show our users a selection of high quality offers that should be carefully considered.
