Mindy Brooks shared this“How do we take this medium and use it in powerful, helpful ways for kids to help them learn, help them grow, help them explore online – and to do so in a safe way?” I had a wonderful time speaking with Jess Kelly for the Tech Talk podcast at our #GrowingUpInTheDigitalAge summit alongside @Garth Graham from YouTube about a topic that is at the very core of what we do: helping families navigate the increasingly digital world. We spoke about the need for practical tools to help parents: like the flexible parental controls offered by Google Family Link – for example setting screen time limits, scheduling “Downtime” to lock devices before bedtime, and managing app approvals – and the importance of active parental engagement like co-viewing. I also enjoyed sharing how my own path to Google wasn’t a straight line – starting with applied developmental psychology and a stint at Sesame Street along the way – and how important it is to follow your interest and passion to find your place in the world. 🎧 You can listen to our full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/dYH8dnbD

Mindy Brooks shared thisWhat a powerful series of conversations at our 4th annual #GrowingUpInTheDigitalAge summit in Dublin – which brought together child and teen safety experts, educators and policymakers who are actively working to build the kind of online world that protects, respects and empowers young people online. Here are six key themes we heard at the summit: 🛡️Parents understandably expect their children's online experiences to come with built-in safeguards. For example – SafeSearch is on by default and we have additional safeguards for Gemini users under 18. 🛠️Parents also need customizable controls to make empowered decisions for their families. I was particularly excited that we showcased our latest improvements on Family Link – easier to set up, easier to manage. 💡In the age of AI, giving young people the right tools to build digital confidence is more critical than ever. @Dr Garth Graham announced a new $20 million initiative from @YouTube and @Google.org for a first-of-its-kind digital wellbeing hub for teens globally. 📋We often hear there is a need for clearly defined standards for age-appropriate content online. We got a deeper look into @YouTube’s recently introduced principles and creator guide for fun, enriching teen content. 🔍Critical to making all of this work is how to check age online. Our research supports a risk-based approach where the level of age assurance matches the potential risk. ⚖️Nuance was key in conversations around restrictions. Blanket bans can push young people to less regulated online spaces and strip away the parental controls and supervised experiences designed to protect kids and give parents choice. This is complex but critical work, and I’m energized by the commitment from everyone who attended to continue making progress. Mindy Brooks shared thisIt's been such an exciting week and great to see all the energy around the new Galaxy devices and Google AI on Android!Mindy Brooks shared thisSamsung just wrapped Galaxy Unpacked 2025, which featured the latest Circle to Search and Gemini updates coming to Android. Gemini is officially coming to Wear OS, making our wearable experience even more intuitive and powerful. One of my favorite use cases for Gemini on Wear OS is the ability to add preferences to my Saved Info and get personalized recommendations based on my preferences. For example, I can ask Gemini for a trendy restaurant nearby and to text it to a friend in Mandarin asking if they want to go there for lunch. Gemini is able to look something up that I’d like, generate and translate a message, and send it to someone in my contacts. Congrats to Samsung and our team that worked to bring these features to life! Mindy Brooks reacted on thisMindy Brooks reacted on thisTechnology isn't a substitute for parenting—it’s a tool for it. When I transitioned from years of educational research into the tech industry, I carried one big question with me: How can we ensure technology empowers kids rather than just distracting them? Working on a team dedicated to how the next generation interacts with the internet is both a massive responsibility and a privilege. As an optimist, I truly believe that when used correctly, technology is a catalyst for development. However, the "secret sauce" isn't just a better algorithm—it’s parental engagement. In this episode of The Disconnect, our VP Mindy Brooks and Dr. Garth Graham (YouTube’s Global Head of Health) dive into: How we build products that foster autonomy and authenticity. Navigating the "choppy waters" of the teenage years. The balance between tech safety features and active parenting. Building for families requires a blend of data-driven safety and human-centric empathy. Mindy Brooks liked thisMindy Brooks liked thisReflecting on an incredible few days in Dublin for Google and YouTube's Growing Up In The Digital Age summit. While the energy of being back at GSEC was a highlight, the depth of the cross-industry dialogue was what really stayed with me. 🇮🇪✨ We spent a lot of time diving into the complexities of youth safety, but three key themes stood out for me across the sessions: Designing for Developmental Stages: Safety isn't one-size-fits-all. There is a growing consensus on the need for age-appropriate design that evolves as a child grows into their teenage years. 📈 The Power of Verification: Our discussions on #AgeAssurance and #DigitalIdentity, including an in-depth presentation led by Terhi H., a fireside chat from Davide Tamagno in conversation with Andrew Moffat from Rail Delivery Group, and a engaging panel on digital wallets and European age verification pilots with Alicia Escriba, Barry Lowry, Florent TOURNOIS and Martin Drechsler, underscored how vital it is to have robust, privacy-preserving ways to understand who is behind the screen. 🛡️ Collective Responsibility: No single company or regulator can solve these challenges in a vacuum. True progress happens when we bridge the gap between technical engineering and academic research. 🤝 I’ve left Dublin feeling energized by the shared commitment to getting this right, and the passion of the people who are working in this space - from policymakers and civil society leaders to those building products used around the world. For those who couldn't join us in person, Mindy Brooks has an excellent summary of the key takeaways and the path forward here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/erXHhQZf It was a privilege to learn from such a diverse group of experts. 😮 This week I had the deep pleasure of chatting with Sebastian Löwe, a design leader whose career beautifully bridges academia, creativity, and applied AI. In our conversation, we explored his concept of the Empathic Web, a future where AI understands and responds to human emotion. What happens when machines can sense our joy or frustration and adjust in real time? What are the risks—and responsibilities—for designers? How do we design for ephemeral, agent-driven experiences? We dug into ethics, the blurry lines between helpful and harmful, and why digital empathy may be one of the most powerful forces shaping the future of human-computer interaction. 🎧 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/eq-GRrNc #AIandDesign #DigitalEmpathy #DesignLeadership #HumanComputerInteraction #FutureOfDesign #UXDesign #EmotionalAI #DesignEthics #AgentInterfaces #EmpathicWeb #AIinDesign #DesignConversation #AI #Design

GV (Google Ventures) have a long history of hiring former designers and design leaders to support their portfolio companies. Folks like Jake Knapp, John Zeratsky, Kate Aronowitz, Daniel Burka, Braden Kowitz, Vanessa Cho, and Tom Hulme. In my latests podcast interview, Kate Aronowitz explains why this is, and what designers bring to the table. Interestingly it's not about craft, but rather the way they see the world with a beginners mind.

Design is changing fast. At Indeed, UXers are leading efforts to codify the context of design, content, and code so LLMs can effectively represent our design language. When we identified gaps in prototyping tooling, we took the initiative to build a better way. We're out in front, shaping how the company designs and builds with AI in a way that still feels uniquely "UX". Jenny Wen, who leads design at Anthropic, describes similar shifts on a recent Lenny podcast: the traditional design loop breaking down, design splitting into execution support and short-range visioning, work moving closer to code. In both cases, designers are solving specific problems within their organizations rather than adopting a universal new design approach. This is where UXers shine—people who understand systems, human behavior, and can identify patterns are well-positioned to understand what's needed and drive these discussions. That's not just true for UX. Subject matter expertise in your field positions you to identify where AI can help solve real problems—if you're willing to participate. Across disciplines, people actively shaping this change are having a fundamentally different experience than those waiting to see what happens. Matt Shumer's piece about how everything is about to change has been a topic of discussion over the past few weeks. It's urgent and alarming. He's right that the pace is accelerating faster than most realize. But there's something critical missing from his message: the future is unwritten, and we have agency to shape it by participating. Jenny Wen noted that early-career designers, without legacy processes or deeply ingrained ways of working, are often more adaptable and open to figuring out new approaches. This isn't solely something new designers can embrace. There's a divide: people who feel AI is happening to them tend to lose hope and motivation, clinging to how things are "meant" to be done. Meanwhile, people letting go of how they used to work, imagining something different, and embracing the ride with intention and curiosity are thriving in their work and emotional state. Participation leads to success, which creates energy, which fuels more participation. A virtuous cycle. What does participation look like? - Being curious and open—going with the flow while determining where you're uniquely positioned to add value - Not being afraid to take up space and lead where you might not have led before - Running experiments with peers, sharing what does and doesn't work - Staying oriented on problems and user needs, acknowledging the path to solutions might look different - Playing in adjacent disciplines - Exploring ways AI solves things important to your work, not forcing it where it doesn't make sense Matt's right that this is urgent. But the answer isn't just preparation—it's active engagement. We're co-authors of what comes next. What are you seeing? How are you participating?

For years, design leadership has been rooted in a familiar rhythm: refine the interface, elevate the craft, ship the next iteration. But the ground is shifting under our feet. Alan Dye leaving Apple to lead Meta’s new AI-focused design studio is more than a career move. It’s a signal of where design leadership is headed next — from polished pixels to the orchestration of intelligent systems. And I think this shift has been building for a while. Design leaders are no longer stewards of screens alone. We’re becoming stewards of behavior. We’re shaping how intelligence shows up for real people in real workflows. That means expanding our craft: - Understanding how AI perceives, interprets, and responds. - Designing workflows where the interface becomes the smallest piece of the experience. - Thinking about failure modes, trust, escalation paths, and recovery states. It’s a new kind of design practice. One where interaction models stretch beyond UI and into environment, context, and intent. AI isn’t replacing design leadership. It’s redefining the battlefield. And the leaders who thrive will be the ones who think beyond surfaces and start designing the systems of intelligence that sit beneath them. https://lnkd.in/g35fcFiU #ProductDesign #DesignLeadership #AIXDesign #FutureOfWork
