A coalition of six major journalism funders — Pivotal Ventures, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, RWJF, The Schmidt Family Foundation, and Ford Foundation — have announced emergency grants to public media stations following federal funding cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). This includes support for the Public Media Bridge Fund, which helps public news stations in rural and underserved communities at risk of closure. WGCU Public Media serves as a key resource for Southwest Florida, offering reliable news, public television, and radio programming. It plays an essential role in the region's public media scene by delivering local content and educational initiatives, and is part of the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network. About 90% of WGCU's funding stems from non-federal sources, including corporate sponsorships, major donations, and individual contributions. The station obtains roughly 10% of its budget through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Should WGCU lose this federal support, the primary impact on Florida Gulf Coast University would likely be on its journalism program, which benefits from a partnership with WGCU. This partnership provides students with hands-on reporting experience and mentorship.
