After 10+ years in instructional design, the most important question I’ve learned to ask is a simple one: why. Not why in an accusatory way. Not why to challenge expertise. But why rooted in genuine curiosity. When I work with SMEs, my first questions are often: Why do you feel this content is important? Why this assignment over another? Why this modality? What problem are you really trying to solve? And then—I listen. I’ve learned that listening is far more important than speaking during those first real conversations. I listen until I truly understand not just what they want, but why they want it. The goals. The constraints. The vision. Only then do I shift gears. That’s when I get to say: Here’s how I can help make that vision a reality. That moment—bridging expertise with learning design, translating ideas into meaningful experiences—is my favorite part of this work. It’s where trust is built, collaboration clicks, and good design begins. Curiosity first. Listening always. Design with purpose.

If you are new to Articulate Storyline, you can benefit from learning to build a course from a template. While that sounds like a great idea, you may not have enough experience to do just that. In this case, Allison LaMotte has provided a great tutorial as well. This template will help you build a gamified quiz. It will help you learn how to customize other templates to increase your collection and be able to use these templates to speed up course building.

The #1 mistake new instructional designers make: They open their authoring tool before they have a plan. SME sends you content. You get excited. You start dragging blocks into Rise or building slides in Storyline. No needs analysis. No performance objectives. No structure. The result? A 45-minute course that should’ve been 10 minutes. Content dumps disguised as “modules.” Zero behavior change. I’ve done this. Most IDs have. Here’s the 10-minute fix I use on every project now: → Ask: what should learners DO differently after this? → Write 3 performance objectives. Not learning objectives. Performance. → Cut everything that doesn’t directly support those 3 goals. That’s it. Before vs After: Before: 12 modules, 45 min, info dump, “learners will understand,” quiz at the end. After: 4 modules, 12 min, scenario-driven, “learners will identify,” practice throughout. The best course isn’t the longest one. It’s the one that changes what people do on Monday morning. Did you know you can Vibe Code for Articulate Storyline as well? Create custom games and interactions with AI that work perfectly inside of your eLearning course? I have talked a lot about getting something you #VibeCoded into the #Rise code block but had someone ask about how to use the code inside of #Storyline so wanted to create a video walking you through how to take something from Claude #AI and use it as a fully functional page inside of Storyline. There are a couple of extra steps to do but I do hope that Storyline implements something like the Rise code block in the future where you can just copy and paste in the code or just import a zip. This however opens up a lot of possibilities still within Storyline, being able to create customizable interactions without complex triggers or logic. Definitely, Instructional Designers are the ones who break down complex instructions into clear guidelines and steps so people can actually complete a task. But honestly, they are also real “𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬.” 🐛📚 The ones who read hundreds of pages, theories, and frameworks… just to give you a 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 and 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲. And then they make sure those insights are structured in a way that anyone can understand them without confusion. So yes… While you enjoy the bite-sized learning, I’m busy 𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤. 📚😄

Over the past 3 years as an instructional designer, my relationship with AI has evolved significantly. 2023–2024: AI was my copilot. - Brainstorming partner - Reviewer - First-draft generator Helped me ship faster with things like MCQs and case/roleplay scenarios Tools I leaned on (and still do): ChatGPT/Claude, HeyGen/Synthesia, Napkin AI 2025: Agentic workflows hit… and “time savings” stopped being the only point. The real question became: How do I make AI + me > AI along / me alone? Here’s the model I use: (1) Human strategize: objectives, audience, quality bar (2) AI scales (with codified human expertise): outline → content (3) Human gates: review quality against criteria (4) Capture drift: capture what drifted and codify it into guidance so each iteration improves I believe the most valuable skill isn’t just knowing your domain + knowing AI. t’s being able to articulate what “good” looks like in your domain—so the human+AI system improves over time. "Just make it engaging.” If you’ve ever worked in instructional design, you’ve heard this from a stakeholder. But here’s the problem: *“engaging”* means nothing unless it’s tied to a learning goal. ✨ True engagement isn’t flashy graphics or gamification for the sake of it. It’s relevance. It’s clarity. It’s giving learners what they need, when they need it—so they can do something *better* as a result. That means understanding your audience, mapping learning to real outcomes, and designing with purpose, not just aesthetics.
