Some of the most meaningful engineering work happens in unexpected places. Rivian’s haptic steering wheel is a great example of a this—a meaningful innovation we didn't realize we needed! But one use and it's obvious this is a leap forward in usability. Vidya Rajagopalan, Rivian's SVP of Electrical Hardware, and her team blended hardware and software to build an adaptive system that gives drivers control and tactile feedback without distraction. Had a lively discussion with emerging leaders of Microsoft Silicon Valley about leading through “do more with less” in an AI-everywhere world. Key takeaways: • Burnout prevention starts with subtraction. Automate and eliminate work that doesn’t matter. Protect attention for judgment, creativity, and customer impact : the things AI can’t replace. • Steadiness is a behavior. Clear language, consistent decision cadence, and simple meeting rituals create calm even when teams fear they’re “not on critical AI work.” • When everything is Priority #1, nothing is. A real triage playbook - right room, right metrics, courage to defer - helps teams focus instead of fearing obsolescence. • Burnout needs intervention, not inspiration. Create think time, rebalance workload, and offer support. Small habits (breathwork, gym, walk-and-talks, tech quiet hours) help people reset in a rapidly changing AI landscape where expectations spell "ship this yesterday!" • Failure is resilience. Safe-to-fail experiments help teams learn, stay relevant, and realize that growth - not perfection - is the antidote to AI-era anxiety. I'm excited to share that our client-platform team at Docusign is open-sourcing our micro-frontend framework and development tooling ecosystem under the moniker 1FE <https://1FE.com>. 1FE is designed for large scaled teams who need to deliver components and widgets independently with velocity, but with a common customer experience and a shared set of tools including a CLI, and a best-practice out-of-the-gate CICD and QA pipeline. Because experiences are stitched together at run-time, individual developers can run and test their in-progress work within the context of a live production instance without impacting the broader group of customers. It was originally designed with the intention that it should be "easy to check-in good code and hard to check-in bad code".
