The average time-to-hire for a senior developer is 90 days. That’s three months of interviews, background checks, and onboarding… before a single line of code gets written. So if you start hiring in January, your new devs don’t start shipping until April. That’s *one quarter of your year gone* before your roadmap even moves. We see it every year at Full Scale. Some CTOs start planning in November or December. Others wait until “after the holidays.” The difference isn’t subtle. The early planners are reviewing candidates before Christmas. Their new developers are sprinting by the first week of January. By February, they’re shipping features while everyone else is still waiting for résumés. That’s the real ROI of early capacity planning — you buy time that can’t be recovered later.

You don't need to hire a software farm for anything anymore. You need one developer who sits next to you for 6 weeks and learns how your business runs. Not how it looks in a deck. How it actually runs. The messy inbox system. The Notion doc nobody follows. The 4-step process your EA does manually every morning. A good AI developer, someone who works in n8n, Claude, and modern automation tools, turns that into systems that run without you. We placed one with a 12-person e-commerce brand. In 8 weeks he'd automated their order exception workflow, their influencer outreach follow-up, and their weekly reporting. The admin team is being trained in AI. Those that don’t adopt are gone. 3 tasks. Each one was eating 6-8 hours a week from someone on the team. That’s money in your pocket. 416h per year. That’s almost a full quarter's worth of work. A dev shop's savings don't matter if they can't ship. Ours do. The best solutions engineer we uncovered in a month of searching wasn't. We knew we needed someone who had worked in a SaaS business, could code in TypeScript, was great with customers, and knew something about troubleshooting API integrations. Ideally they had some experience of automating parts of their work with AI and some understanding of LLMs. The startup we were working with wanted a Solutions engineer, and so, of course, we spent a lot of time talking to people with that title. We also spent time talking to Full-Stack engineers who wanted more customer-facing roles, Integration specialists with the right tech stack, Presales people, and Technical Account Managers. In the end though, the best person we interviewed for the role was someone calling themselves a Customer Success Engineer.  Job titles are not clear signposts. Good agencies earn their fees through thorough investigations and careful interviews to connect you with people who understand the work you need done and are willing to do it. Remote work is killing Junior Developer careers Senior engineers love remote work because they already know how to debug, navigate codebases, and ask the right questions. Junior developers? They're drowning. You can't replicate overhearing a Senior Engineer solve a tricky problem. You can't replace the casual "hey, can you look at this?" moments. They've traded mentorship for Slack messages. Pair programming for async code reviews. Learning through observation for scheduled "check-ins." The result? Juniors taking 2x longer to become productive. Higher turnover. More burnout. But companies keep hiring them remotely because it's "cheaper" and "inclusive." Then wonder why they quit after 6 months. Remote work is fantastic for experienced engineers. For juniors, it's career sabotage wrapped in work-life balance promises. Are we sacrificing the next generation of developers for convenience?

Unpopular opinion: Your developer community shouldn't be free. Everyone says "build community, give value, never ask for anything." I call BS. The healthiest developer communities I've worked with have clear value exchange. Not necessarily money, but something. - Contribute code examples, get early access - Answer questions consistently, get recognition and perks - Build with the platform, get featured and co-marketing Free communities attract tire-kickers. Value exchange attracts invested members. The developers who pay (with time, expertise, or money) are the ones who stick around and become advocates. Junior Software Engineers—You can’t be everything to everyone…and you shouldn’t try to be. Mark Zuckerberg would be an awful CEO for Bank of America, but he is the perfect CEO for Meta. Fit matters…and every manager is looking for something different. Some hiring managers want to see you grinding LeetCode for hours. Others think that’s a waste of time and irrelevant to real-world work. Some love to hire bootcamp grads with no degree. Others won’t even look at a resume without a Master’s in Computer Science. Some want to see a huge portfolio of side projects. Others see those same projects as noise that doesn’t translate well in an enterprise setting. You won’t get every job. That’s okay. The goal isn’t to mold yourself into whatever version each company wants. The real goal is to find the place where your skills, values, and growth goals actually align. Be yourself. Be prepared. Keep improving.

Most dev teams think Swagger UI is documentation. I think it's the reason 60% of API integrations fail. Here's what's actually killing your partnerships… Swagger UI is not documentation. It is a tester. It is not a guide to first success. I’ve watched teams ship an API with a shiny Swagger UI and zero context. An integrator then spends hours clicking endpoints to guess the sequence. Launch stalls. Support explodes later. A working API is not an easy to use product. What was missing: • Plain language descriptions for each endpoint. What it does. When to use it. • Authentication path. How to get a key or token. Where it goes in the request. • First call guide. One page that gets a response in Postman in under five minutes. • Sequence map for core flows. Call A, then B, then C. What you pass from one to the next. • Try it for real. In-doc auth or a Postman collection so people can run the flow end to end. How I fix it in week one: 1. Write the First call page. Key, header, sample request, expected response. 2. Add an Auth guide with the exact steps and a copy-paste snippet. 3. Document the sequence for the top two jobs to be done. Show the order and the hand-off values. 4. Add plain language descriptions to every endpoint in Swagger. No jargon. 5. Publish a Postman collection and link it inside the docs. If a partner has to reverse engineer your API, you are burning time and goodwill. Fix the guides before the next sprint and your next launch will move. Cypress recruiters have reviewed hundreds of thousands of resumes. Trust me, we’ve seen it all. Most of the “resume hacks” floating around the internet stink. This is the same advice we’d give anyone serious about landing a job. 1. Stop listing tasks. Nobody cares what you were “responsible for.” Show the impact. 2. Spell out the objective. Hiring teams don’t have time to play detective. 3. Cut the fluff. If your big wins are buried in paragraphs, you already lost. 4. ATS “optimization”? Waste of time. Relationships beat keywords every day. 5. If you’re experienced, education goes at the bottom. GPA from 2012 is old news. 6. Hobbies? Add them only if they’re interesting. Half of the battle is building relationships during interviews, which isn’t easy, and interesting hobbies only help. Resumes don’t need more words. I Googled the definition of "full stack developer" today (see screenshot). I mostly agree: front-end, back-end, databases, DevOps. Okay, sure. But notice the gradient of competence: - Front-end: experts -- Back-end: proficient --- Databases: knowledgeable ---- DevOps: familiar And nowhere does it mention OS, networking, shell, or how the system actually behaves under stress. Maybe that’s just modern abstraction at work. Maybe I'm just old. But when I interview “full-stack” engineers who can’t run a direct DB query, reason about connection pools, or debug below the framework layer, I start to wonder what we mean by the term. My early stack wasn’t clean or elegant - Linux, Java, Postgres, MySQL, JBoss, Perl, Javascript, Struts, and dirty shell scripts holding it together ("dev ops" lol). It forced me to understand the failure surface. I get it - stacks evolve. Maybe my expectations should too.
