Matt Linville, CES®, MBA shared thisWhy was Memorial Day a sober occasion in our home? This was my mom's first husband, Kirby, killed after only three months in Vietnam. Though many will forget, some will always remember. SP4 Donald K. Cheek was an infantryman serving with A Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. On December 8, 1968, SP4 Cheek was part of a platoon-sized patrol on Highway 6A, a dirt road between FSB Pershing and Trang Bang in Hua Nghia Province, RVN. The patrol formation generally consisted of a point element on the road walking spaced out down each of the road edges. They were flanked by a column of men 50 to 100 yards out on each side, plus a rear security to react to any enemy behind the friendly troops. As the point moved down the road, an explosion suddenly occurred. Cheek, who was leading one of the columns on the road, was killed instantly after being hit in the chest by metal fragments from an explosive device concealed on the roadside. His remains were flown to the 12th Evacuation Hospital at Cu Chi where he was declared dead by medical staff, then turned over to Graves Registration for processing and return to the United States. I never met Kirby. He was my mother’s first husband and a part of her life before I was born. But I grew up knowing his name, hearing pieces of his story, and understanding the weight of his sacrifice. His name is etched on Panel 37W, Line 62 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., but his legacy lives far beyond that wall. “Freedom has a price. If you have heard me talk about it, you know that Saturdays, Sundays, rainy day Mondays, on vacation days, and I just don't feel like it days...they all count. Always plan accordingly! John's path began in 2022 with a single course—more than 20 years after his last college class—and grew into a full academic journey that included the MBA Pathway Program. While balancing a high-level full-time role, he embraced every challenge, completing 32 courses at UNCP along the way. As he graduated this past weekend, with an MBA, and stand just one course away from a 4.0, his experience highlights the value of determination and steady progress. 💬 Advice to fellow students: “At the beginning, graduation can seem so far off it can be intimidating.
