Exciting news from our Clarios Connected Services team today as we announced a new partnership with Ruan Transportation Management Systems. Ruan is one of the largest private fleets in the U.S. with over 3,500 power units and 9,500 trailers. Now is an ideal time for retailers to rethink their supply chain strategies. How do you get closer to the customer? Advance Auto Parts is looking to cut distribution centers, streamline operations, and expand regional locations so they can get the right products to the right customers more quickly. New CEO Shane O'Kelly has a clear mission. Trained at The Home Depot, he draws on a successful supply chain history. As he put it: “Consolidating the supply chain to create the right part in the right place is an absolute linchpin of what we’re doing." This is a smart strategy. In a world of increased volatility, the best way to win is to work backwards from customer demand, and find out how to solve it as quickly as possible. Time is money, and shorter/faster supply chains can make retailers much more profitable. As Walmart demonstrated with its "Remix" strategy, the savings from reducing DCs can vastly exceed any incremental costs from last mile, particularly with a good last mile orchestration partner. If I were advising Advance Auto Parts, I would encourage them to upgrade their last-mile partners, technology for tracking/visibility, and inventory management. Chatting with ZEDEDA CEO, Said Ouissal, and he has an elegant way of explaining the evolution of industrial Edge. Zededa provides OS for orchestrating Edge AI. 2010s were about IoT/Edge Connectivity. 2020s were about Edge computing/processing. 2030s will be all about Edge AI.

ServiceTitan recently went public, and is now trading at a $9.3B valuation. Its founders, Ara Mahdessian and Vahe Kuzoyan, were total outsiders to the back-office automation industry for traditional service businesses—the market where ServiceTitan operates. Both are first-generation Armenian-American immigrants who met in college. They studied software engineering and founded ServiceTitan straight out of school. The inspiration? As kids, they watched their parents—small business owners in home services—come home after a long workday, only to spend hours on bookkeeping, paperwork, and admin, at the expense of family and rest time. So they automated it all. More examples of industry outsiders who successfully built billion-dollar companies: - Toast (Restaurant software, founded by mobile/cloud engineers, valued at $21B). - Xometry (Custom parts procurement software, founded by an ex-politician, now a $2B public company) And in Israel: - Global-e (Cross-border eCommerce software, founded by ex-bankers, now a $10B public company) - Lemonade (AI-native insurance, founded by pure tech entrepreneurs, now a $2.5B public company) And there are many many more. Why am I writing this? In Israel, there’s a common belief that you must come from an industry to build a company in it. From personal experience at Fundbox, I believe that the opposite is true, and that outsider’s advantage—bringing a fresh perspective that’s unburdened by the industry’s orthodox thinking–is real and powerful. Very often, it’s a lot easier for outsiders to acquire necessary knowledge about a no/low tech industry, than for insiders to develop the skill set and state of mind to create a world-class digital product and tech. That’s not to say insiders can’t build amazing companies—but it’s definitely not the only path.
