One idea stayed with me after this week’s podcast conversation: Lasting change doesn’t start with performance, pressure, or urgency. It starts with trust. In our latest episode of The Coaching Book Club Podcast, Ken M. and Christy Stuber, LCSW, PCC explored Helping People Change by Richard Boyatzis, Melvin L. Smith, Ph.D. Ellen B. Van Oosten, PhD, BCC — a book that reminds us how much change depends on emotional safety, compassion, and a learning mindset. AI is moving fast in learning and education. Governance is struggling to keep up. And that gap matters more than most people realize. Responsible AI use in L&D isn’t about blocking tools or writing long policy documents that no one reads. It’s about protecting learning quality, assessment integrity, and trust—while still allowing teams to move forward. A few things I’ve learned along the way: Governance starts with intent, not technology. Before asking “Can AI do this?” we should ask “Should it?” and “What does good look like here?” Quality doesn’t come from the AI alone. AI can generate content quickly, but without instructional judgment, clear standards, and human review, speed just creates noise at scale. Assessment deserves special care. If AI-generated questions reward pattern-spotting instead of reasoning, learners will optimize for the test—not the skill. That’s a design failure, not a learner problem. Responsible AI use is a leadership responsibility. It shapes how work gets done, how decisions are made, and what performance is rewarded. This isn’t just an IT or compliance issue—it’s central to learning strategy. The goal isn’t to slow innovation. It’s to make sure AI strengthens learning outcomes instead of quietly undermining them. Used well, AI helps us build better, fairer, more relevant learning experiences. Used carelessly, it just accelerates existing problems. The last Learning Designers Community (LDC) meetup brought together 17 learning designers from ed tech, L&D, K12, and LX design to reflect on #CarlHendrick’s webinar on the Five Illusions of Learning. Like all LDC meetups, the focus was on practice in real learning contexts. As I co-facilitated for the first time, three things stood out for me. #Illusion1: engagement does not always mean learning. We ideated on how to look beyond visible cues, what deep learning means & how activities remain in memory & not learning! #Second, discovery learning may not work for novice learners. We spoke about sequencing content more carefully, providing clearer guidance to new leaners while amping up self-learning challenges for advanced ones. #Third, Small wins help retain continued motivation, especially among younger learners. Most of us were raking our brians on how to find the balance between designing for easy wins vs friction for deeper learning. This space helped access a sense of validation, engagement & fun! Your favorite AI note-taker might cost you your ICF credential. More than half of coaches are now using AI to transcribe sessions, track goals, and write session summaries. It saves hours of administrative work. But there is a catch. Under the updated ICF 2025 Code of Ethics (Standard 2.5), using AI without explicit, informed consent is a direct ethical violation. You cannot just assume your client is okay with an AI bot joining your Zoom call. You cannot bury it in a 10-page terms of service agreement.
