I’m starting onboarding this week at the South San Francisco headquarters before heading back to Seattle, where I’ll be based. I had a short but meaningful time at Expedia and got to work with some really great people, but this was one of those decisions where I listened to my gut and decided to go for it. What really drew me in is Stripe’s mission to increase the GDP of the internet — and how much that ultimately comes down to people. The ambition is clear, but it’s the focus on building strong teams and enabling them to do their best work that made this feel like the right place for me. Early days, but already feels like the right decision. Really grateful to a few people who played a big role in this decision — the recruiters who guided me through the process (Shana Hedge & Niamh Favier ), Gregg M., and Kyle Martodam for the opportunity. And to the many friends and peers who are (or have been) at Stripe — thank you for being such thoughtful and honest sounding boards along the way 🤍

Makenzie O'Connell reacted on thisMakenzie O'Connell reacted on thisWhelp, after 8 wild years, it’s time for me to log off from Meta for the last time. ✌️ When I joined back in 2018, we were still Facebook, the metaverse sounded like a sci-fi movie plot, and I was just trying to figure out where the good snacks were hidden. Fast forward to today, and I’ve had a front-row seat to some of the most insane growth, rebrands, and pivots in tech history. As a recruiter, my job was literally to convince brilliant people to come build the future with us. And let me tell you, selling the dream is a lot easier when you’re surrounded by a team that actually makes it happen. We hired for everything from Reality Labs to AI, navigating the highs, the lows, and the "wait, we're calling it Meta now?" moments. Here are a few things I’m taking with me: 1. Don't take yourself too seriously. We’re building cool tech, not curing cancer. A little humor goes a long way when the pressure is on. 2. The people make the place. To every candidate who trusted me, every hiring manager who partnered with me, and every teammate who kept me sane—thank you. You are the real MVPs. 3. Adaptability is everything. If you can survive a massive rebrand, a global pandemic, and the pivot to AI, you can handle pretty much anything. To my Meta fam: keep crushing it, keep building wild things, and please, save some of those micro-kitchen snacks for the new folks. As I process this change, I want to express my gratitude to all the incredible people I've met around the world through this job. The saying that the people you work with can make or break your experience is truly accurate. Whether it was collaborating on high-pressure projects that kept us working late into the night, sharing laughs over shows like Love is Blind, or traveling together, Meta has connected me with some remarkable individuals. We've celebrated milestones such as weddings, new babies, and new homes, and now we are on to the next chapter of our careers. While I'm uncertain about what lies ahead, I am thankful to call these people my friends. If you know of any companies hiring, especially for remote positions, please keep me in mind.

Makenzie O'Connell liked thisMakenzie O'Connell liked thisWomen are not “leaning out” by choice. Somewhere along the way, that became the narrative. That mid-career women are stepping back because they "want" to. But the data tells a different story. 1 in 3 women have considered downshifting or leaving the workforce. That is not a motivation problem. This is a signal. Because this is happening during the same years women are stepping into bigger roles, carrying more responsibility, and being pulled in every direction. And for many, it is also when perimenopause begins. Not at 60 like we may have grown up thinking. But in our late 30s and 40s. Right in the middle and often peak of our careers. What gets labeled as burnout or disengagement can also look like disrupted sleep, brain fog, and constant fatigue due to hormonal changes. When I left my career I thought I was burnt out because I was never taught that these symptoms could be anything else. High performers do not suddenly lose their ambition. We don't decide after decades of climbing the ladder to just jump off of it. But without the right awareness we are forced to make a decision to choose between our health and our career. So instead of asking why women are stepping back, we should be asking: What tools can we provide as a company to prevent it from happening in the first place?
