I’ve seen it in training environments. I’ve seen it when pressure hits unexpectedly. The brain stalls when it doesn’t have a preloaded script. That’s why rehearsal matters. When you’ve mentally walked through scenarios before they happen, your brain has somewhere to go under stress. Preparedness isn’t about reacting faster. It’s about reducing hesitation. Most retail LP/AP teams are being asked to do more with less. Less headcount. Less travel. Less dedicated support. At the same time, expectations around safety, shrink, investigations, operational compliance, and brand protection continue to rise. The reality is: strong Asset Protection programs are no longer built solely on headcount. They’re built on influence, operational alignment, partnerships, prioritization, and the ability to create impact at scale. Shrink is not an AP problem. It’s an operations reality. When shrink misses plan, the first reaction is usually to look for theft. That’s lazy leadership. Shrink lives in my: • Receiving discipline • Process adherence • Returns behavior • Backroom control • Exception management Example: A store starts seeing unexplained variance in high-theft SKUs. No indicators of organized theft. No spike in incidents. The issue? • Incomplete receiving verification • Shortcuts on deliveries • Exceptions cleared without validation No bad intent—just loose process. Once receiving audits tightened, exception handling slowed down, and ownership was reassigned, the variance corrected itself. No apprehension. No case build. Just operational control. Apprehensions matter—but process recoveries move the needle. Shrink doesn’t improve because people “try harder.” It improves when operations get tighter, cleaner, and more consistent. Theft and policy violations don’t start with intent - they start with opportunity. In any workplace, risk lives at the intersection of Need and Opportunity. When both are present, the likelihood of poor decision-making increases, sometimes leading to theft or policy violations. The goal isn’t just to eliminate one. It’s to separate them. That separation comes from leadership in action. Support: When we invest in our people through recognition, development, coaching, and genuine care, we reduce the pressures that can lead to poor decisions. Support isn’t one-size-fits-all. It shows up differently for everyone, and it matters more than we think. Impression of Control: Clear expectations, consistent execution, visible controls, and accountability reduce the opportunity for bad decisions to happen. This isn’t a one-time effort. As a Loss Prevention (LP) Executive in retail, we are always busy. People call us for everything: if things are stolen, if a mistake happens with the inventory, execution, shrinkage or even if someone falls down in the store. We are called everywhere because we keep the store safe and help the company save money. But here is the main problem: When it's time for company awards or praise, the LP team often gets missed. Why does our hard work sometimes go unnoticed? Quiet Wins: Our best work is stopping bad things from happening. If we stop a big theft, no one sees it. It’s a quiet success. It saves the company money, but it doesn't get the same big cheer as a large sales deal. Expected Job: People sometimes think, 'That's just their job to stop losses,' and they don't see it as special. Behind the Scenes: Our work is often private, like watching cameras or investigating fraud. Toxic work timings night,morning, evening in a week.It happens behind the scenes. Competitive processes don’t always reward alignment — sometimes they reward timing. I’ve had several strong conversations recently around senior loss prevention and risk leadership roles. While not every process ends in an offer, each one reinforces the value of experience, preparation, and clear operational impact.
