I’m thrilled to be part of the AFP - Greater AZ Chapter’s mentorship program as a mentor to Benjamin Gokee, Associate Director of Development at Children’s Cancer Network. We had a our first meeting earlier this week, and later today I’ll be joining him and the others for the program orientation. And honestly, that first conversation was the best reminder of why this program matters. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in my career is that mentoring isn’t about having all the answers – it’s about how you show up. A few things I keep coming back to when mentoring early-career professionals: 🔹 Ask how they’re thinking, not just what they’re doing. Judgement develops through reasoning, not instructions. 🔹 Share context, not just outcomes. “Where’s why that decision was made” matters more than “here’s what we did.” 🔹 Name the parts of the job that aren’t obvious. Expectations, office politics, and timing are often harder than the mechanics. 🔹 Translate best practices into real-world context. Real growth comes from knowing how to apply them in imperfect, evolving situations. 🔹 Help expand their circle, not just their skillset. Advocacy and introductions can accelerate growth in ways guidance alone can’t. Programs matter. Structure helps.
