Recently, at Executive Coaches of Orange County (ECofOC), we introduced a program called the Path to Board Excellence (with collaboration and guidance from our friends at Charitable Ventures). One element of this program was helping nonprofit CEOs and their board chairs develop greater clarity about their individual and shared roles and responsibilities. In this interview with Rich Stoddart, a director on boards including Hasbro, and an interim CEO, offers some terrific insight into the topic of board/CEO collaboration. One of Rich’s comments: “As I heard someone say recently, the CEO’s job is to manage the content, and the chair’s job is to manage the process. We often think the best idea always wins. In reality, the idea backed by innovation capital wins, not necessarily the most brilliant one. Innovation capital is the credibility, trust, relationships, and track record that allow an idea to move forward.
