Lilian Kwan reacted on thisLilian Kwan reacted on thisDear Esteemed Colleagues and Friends, After 45 years in the cement and concrete industry, I write to formally announce my retirement, effective May 15, 2026. As I reflect on these 45 years, my heart is filled above all with gratitude for the many colleagues and friends who made this journey not only successful, but deeply enjoyable. Whatever I may have accomplished in my career was never achieved alone. It was made possible by the wisdom, encouragement, generosity, and friendship of the remarkable people I had the privilege to work alongside. Through every season of this industry’s growth and change, I was fortunate to be surrounded by talented, dedicated, and kind people from across the world. You challenged me to grow, supported me through difficult moments, celebrated successes with me, and brought purpose and joy to the work we shared together. Thank you for your trust, your partnership, your insight, and your unwavering support over the years. More than that, thank you for the conversations, the laughter, the encouragement, and the friendships that made even the hardest work meaningful. You helped shape not just my career, but my life, and for that I will always be grateful. Some of my most treasured memories are not only of projects completed or milestones reached, but of the people beside me along the way—on job sites, in meetings, at conferences, and in the many moments in between. Your camaraderie, friendship, and belief in me brought a richness to these years that I will carry with me always. As I begin this next chapter and look forward to more time with my family, I do so with immense pride, deep appreciation, and countless fond memories. Thank you for making these 45 years so rewarding, meaningful, and enjoyable. I leave with a full heart, knowing how fortunate I have been to share this career with so many extraordinary colleagues and dear friends. I also extend my sincere thanks to the organizations I’ve been honored to serve over the years: Southdown/CEMEX, CalPortland, and the Northwest Cement Council, where I worked as a consultant and served as Chairman of the Pacific Northwest Building Resilience Coalition. Thank you, sincerely and wholeheartedly, for being such an important part of my life and career. I will always cherish the lessons, the memories, and above all, the friendships that have made these 45 years so special. With deepest appreciation, Bill

Lilian Kwan liked thisLilian Kwan liked thisTo everyone job searching right now — I just want to say this is genuinely one of the hardest job markets in over a decade. Some of the statistics: - 1.2 million people were laid off in 2025 - 58% more than 2024, the highest since the pandemic. - In 2026, an average of over 700 people lose their job every single day. - Large corporations are not exempt - Meta, Amazon, Morgan Stanley. The list keeps growing every week. If you're searching for a job right now, sending applications into silence, getting rejections after multiple rounds of interviews and tired of purposefully updating your resume to pass the AI screening for every application - I want you to know that what you're feeling is not weakness. It's a completely normal response to an abnormal situation. In recent survey I read, 73% of job seekers said this search is harder than anything they've experienced before. Almost half applied to over 100 roles just to get one offer. Most say it's affecting their mental health. You are not alone in this. The shame that comes with a long search — "why is this taking so long, what's wrong with me" — is a lie. * Your worth is not determined by a callback rate. * Your value is not measured by how fast a company responds. * You are more than your employment status. If you're struggling today, — that's okay. Feel it. Take the day if you need it. And when you're ready — come back. Keep going. This market will not stay this way forever. And you are closer than you think. 💙

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐲𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐞 Poor financial hygiene rarely triggers an immediate crisis. Instead, it quietly erodes EBITDA, increases diligence risk, and weakens negotiating leverage. Inconsistent reconciliations, unsupported adjustments, and delayed reporting reduce confidence in the numbers. Buyers and lenders respond by discounting value or imposing stricter terms, even when the business performs well operationally. Is it about to get even harder to hire an Accountant? If you’ve tried to hire a Controller or Senior Accountant recently, you know the talent pool is shallow. A new draft regulation from the Dept. of Education might just drain it completely. The AICPA is currently fighting a proposal that would strip accounting programs of their "professional degree" designation for student loan eligibility. If they did, it would mean fewer students who can afford to become CPAs. The pipeline shrinks even more than it already is.. For Business Owners: The days of easily hiring a "full-time, in-house" accounting team are ending. The supply of talent simply cannot keep up with the demand. This is why the Fractional Model isn't a trend, it's now the norm. You have to share the talent to survive. We support the AICPA’s fight to protect the profession. But in the meantime, Imperial is here to fill the gap. #AccountingTalent #CPA #BusinessNews #LaborMarket

Facing a California Sales and Use Tax Audit? A California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) audit is one of the most demanding examinations a business can face. These audits often review multiple reporting periods and require extensive documentation, including general ledgers, inventory records, cost of goods sold (COGS) analyses, invoices, and bank statements. Even minor classification errors can compound into significant assessments, penalties, and interest. Sales and use tax audits are not routine reviews — they are serious investigations with real financial and legal consequences. Experienced legal representation: • Manages communications with the CDTFA • Protects sensitive disclosures • Preserves attorney-client privilege • Strategically addresses audit findings • Minimizes disruption to daily operations If your business has received a CDTFA audit notice, early representation can materially affect the outcome. The AICPA and state CPA societies strongly oppose any proposal that fails to recognize accounting as a professional degree program. Accounting is a profession – full stop – one built on trust, integrity, and rigorous standards. As such, we urge the Department of Education to recognize accounting programs as professional degree programs. This definition matters. Key Highlights of new state bills passed: Oregon enacted SB1507, a broad revenue bill affecting IRC conformity, earned income tax credit treatment, job credits, depreciation-related addbacks, and other state tax provisions. Why it matters: Its broad scope means multiple areas of state taxation are affected at once, making it immediately relevant for compliance reviews and client planning. Arkansas enacted HB1100 and SB75, both addressing Revenue Stabilization Law changes and state fund transfers. Why it matters: Changes to revenue allocation frameworks can influence how state-funded programs are supported, with downstream implications for tax policy and budgeting. Kansas SB82, passed and presented to the governor, contains several tax credit changes, including new credits and repeal of certain existing credits. Why it matters: The volume and variety of credit changes signal a meaningful shift in incentive structures that may affect multiple client segments. Colorado HB1120 passed with changes to mobile home property taxation and delinquent tax procedures. Why it matters: Direct changes to property tax rules may require immediate attention for affected taxpayers, particularly those with mobile home assets. Alaska SB21 crossed over and had a May 4, 2026 hearing on the Work and Save retirement program. Why it matters: Retirement program proposals can introduce new employer-related obligations and planning considerations if enacted. California AB2270 remains active and would adjust how farmworker housing projects are treated under the low-income housing tax credit program. Why it matters: Targeted changes to housing credits can affect project eligibility and planning for clients in agricultural and workforce housing sectors. New York continues to advance local occupancy tax proposals for Kingston and Amherst. Why it matters: Multiple similar local proposals point to a broader revenue trend that may expand to additional jurisdictions, particularly affecting hospitality-related clients.

WP+D's Barry Graham, CPA, CMA, senior audit manager, shares his insight on AI with Arizona CPAs in the January 2026 edition of AZ CPA magazine. Link to article in comments. Excerpt: AI tools can enhance what we do, but they can’t replace our professional reasoning, ethics or industry context. Just like Excel didn’t eliminate accountants but empowered them, AI has the potential to improve efficiency and free up time for higher-level tasks. Think of it this way: search engines show you where to look; AI attempts to give you the answer. Your job is to make sure that answer is correct. Whether you work in audit, tax, CAS or industry, AI is quickly becoming a standard tool – just like spreadsheets or engagement software. The question isn’t whether to use it, but how to use it well. #AIforCPAs #AI #AIforAccountants #ArizonaCPAs

The current version of the bill making its way through the Senate could raise taxes on millions of small and midsized businesses, specifically specified service trades or businesses (SSTBs). Accounting firms fall under this umbrella, and our industry is responding. The AICPA has asked the Senate Finance Committee and House Ways and Means Committee to adjust multiple provisions of the bill that could disadvantage small businesses, service providers, and accountants alike. This Accounting Today article summarizes those provisions: https://ow.ly/esBS30sNk7q #TaxBill #Tax #SSTB #PTET

We value the accounting profession, but business valuation requires specialized expertise and credentials. Fewer than 1% of CPAs are accredited in business valuation by the AICPA or another appraisal organization. A certified appraisal by a trained professional (CBA, ASA) is: ✔️ Independent and unbiased ✔️ Compliant with professional standards and USPAP ✔️ Defensible under scrutiny in court or negotiations Additionally, your CPA may face conflicts of interest if they also provide tax or audit services. That’s why working with a specialized, accredited business valuation firm matters. At Merrimack Business Appraisers, we collaborate with CPAs, attorneys, and advisors to deliver valuations you can trust. 📖 Learn more: https://bit.ly/2DVj9AR

Rutt ro. In January 2026, the California State Controller’s Office started auditing the City of Stockton… and when you look at the payroll numbers, it’s not hard to see why. After a payroll system transition, the City had to: • Issue $1,670,009 in retro pay to fix 5,412 underpayments affecting 1,383 employees • Address $452,331 in overpayments (with about $105K still not recovered) • Pay $120,000 in penalties to CalPERS because payroll reporting was, on average, 23 days late Read those numbers again. And this is payroll. Not some complicated accounting estimate or journal entry. Payroll. The largest, most predictable expense most organizations have! From a financial leadership perspective, this usually isn’t about one mistake. It’s about systems: – Personnel changes not getting entered timely – Payroll not being reconciled every single cycle – ERP implementations going live before they’re truly stable – No clear ownership of controls from start to finish And keep in mind, payroll errors don’t stay in payroll. They roll into your financial statements. They distort liabilities. They impact pension reporting. They damage credibility…internally and publicly. This is why strong cities need strong financial infrastructure. Experienced Controllers. Solid Payroll Managers. Financial Systems folks who understand controls. Internal audit that actually functions as a safeguard, not an afterthought. Financial stability isn’t about reacting to audits. It’s about designing systems strong enough that audits confirm what you already know. Curious what others think….especially those in municipal finance or public sector leadership. What control breakdown do you see most often during system transitions? Sources: Stocktonia. (2026). State Controller’s Office begins audit of city’s internal control system. Stocktonia. (2025). Stockton made over 5,000 payroll errors since 2023.

📉 The accounting profession is facing a recruitment crisis—but is lowering the bar the solution? Barry Melancon, outgoing CEO of the AICPA, says no. He’s standing firm on the 150-hour education requirement, arguing that even as technology transforms the field, rigorous standards are essential to maintaining trust and quality. At Acounta, we believe the future of accounting isn’t about shortcuts—it’s about smart tools, strong training, and empowering professionals to do their best work. #AccountingFuture #CPA #PracticeManagement #WorkIncredibly 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eyQEFvNW
