Most museums still feel like they’re built for curators, not for people. That needs to change. Museums should be radically visitor-first—designed around the interests, needs, and emotions of the communities they serve. They can be fun. Emotional. Social. They can offer rest, connection, inspiration. They can be cultural sanctuaries and everyday hangouts. They can do more than inform—they can transform. A museum is a medium. Let’s stop treating it like a temple and start treating it like a platform.

Aloha friends and family. Recent posts I’ve shared on decolonizing design education generated a great deal of thoughtful engagement, and I wanted to continue those reflections in a fuller way. I’ve just published a new essay on my website that grows out of a question I keep returning to: What does it really mean to decolonize design education? Too often, the conversation begins and ends with curriculum. But I believe the deeper issue lies in the foundations through which design defines knowledge, legitimacy, and practice. This new essay, HOʻOHULI KE KAHUA — Turning the Foundations of Knowledge in Design Education, explores that deeper ground. It also begins to frame the role of Makawalu in my own work as a theoretical approach to expanding how design sees.
