When Anthropic announced a legal plugin as part of a broader expansion of Claude's Cowork feature last week, it didn’t take long for legal tech stocks to plummet. Since Tuesday, stocks among public legal tech companies Thomson Reuters, LegalZoom, RELX, Wolters Kluwer, DISCO and Intapp saw drops ranging from about 12 to 20%. However, onlookers say the reaction from investors is overblown. “This is going to be a minor blip rather than a sustained market downturn for legal companies, especially legal companies like Thomson Reuters and RELX of LexisNexis, because those companies have deep bodies of legal content that something like Anthropic does not have access to,” Legaltech Hub CEO and cofounder Nicola Shaver told Legaltech News. https://loom.ly/m1rGNjA

It is very rare for big law firms such as Sullivan & Cromwell LLP to include AI-generated errors in a court filing, said Damien Charlotin, who oversees a database tracking court cases in which an AI hallucination has been verified by a judge or acknowledged by the lawyers involved. More often, the mistakes are made by solo practitioners in cases involving many parties, said Charlotin, who is also a senior research fellow at French business school HEC Paris. California’s record-breaking #privacy settlement with Disney fleshed out the state's attorney general’s expectations for businesses seeking to comply with opt-out requirements in the California Consumer Privacy Act (#CCPA), privacy experts said this week. Metaverse Law attorney Lily Li told Privacy Daily the enforcement action shows regulators “aren’t just looking at privacy policies.” “When a person in California directs a company to opt out of the sale and sharing of personal data, the general expectation is that the company stop the sharing and selling of data tied to their account everywhere, and not just on one streaming service or device,” Justin Kloczko, Consumer Watchdog tech and privacy advocate, emailed us Friday. https://lnkd.in/e8mJaW9A
