CA / CPA / MBA is not enough. Many finance leaders think, we have hired CA or CPA or MBA and our finance team is sorted. But its far from truth. I have worked with many CAs, CPA or MBA. I am one too. I respect the degree. - It gives discipline. - It gives structure. - It teaches you how not to break rules. But very early in my career and life, I realised degree alone does not run a business. A business needs someone who knows how to keep the lights on. You basically need a professional degree plus "business thinking". Professional degree is the foundation, not the finish line. So yes, hire a CA or CPA or MBA. That is important. But make sure they can also think like an operator, not just a reporter. #BusinessThinking

AI-powered tools can analyse large datasets, detect patterns, and provide predictive insights, which help businesses make better-informed decisions.

One time adjustments are test of your credibility Every PE backed company's CFO presents adjusted EBITDA. But PE firms quietly assess whether your adjustments are justifiable, consistent and intellectually honest. If they are too aggressive, you risk losing trust and on the flip side, if you are too conservative, you leave value on the table. Private equity firms look at your adjustments as a window into your mindset. We need to operate with a clear internal framework - What qualifies as a true one-off? - Are we applying the same principle - across all periods and business units? - can we defend this to auditors & acquirers? Because in PE, trust is binary. Once it’s lost, it rarely recovers. #PE

How does a Group CFO resolve this quagmire , this tricky situation ? CFOs have many delicate , yet, critically important relationships to deal with. If I have to single out one, it is the relationship with the CEO of SBU / Business Vertical / SBU head. As Group CFO, this may extend to many SBU heads / CEO's of different Business Verticals . This is not either way, a reporting relationship , but a relationship which needs to be handled with utmost care. Initially , this used to be a big challenge for me , when as Group CFO , you are handling many business verticals and many SBU heads. I eventually figured this out, after hits and misses, my own learnings. Let us accept : There is element of some level of Mistrust , with Group CFO, who is invariably considered to be coming from the Head office / Corporate office, and , SBU heads, question if the CFO is giving a level playing field to them. Financial resources are limited, and the SBU heads expect funds to be allocated to their business vertical. Then, there are Finance teams at SBU , who are reporting to the SBU head and also have to deal with the Group CFO. Still , there may be some Business Verticals which the CFO may not have handled . How does a Group CFO resolve this quagmire ? It is perfectly fine for the CFO to give differential treatment to SBU heads, depending upon CFO's comfort level, financial health of the SBU , Size and complications of SBU -Eg, Real estate and Manufacturing may need more time than a logistics business due to their complex business models . Good Listener, Patience and ability to talk business with the respective CEO , and adding value to them, helps the CFO . Effective delegation by CFO, also helps in managing this delicate but a very critical relationship Regardless , CFO needs to set his own boundaries .

Behind every “smooth-running” finance function, there’s usually a layer of problems waiting to be discovered. CFOs aren’t hired to maintain the status quo. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has integrated all the services including Income Tax, Sales Tax, Digital Invoicing and Integration on a single platform in the IRIS portal. Apparently, this facility provides convenience in the form of a “one window”, but some of its major disadvantages are emerging: If a technical glitch occurs in any one section or module, the entire portal is affected. As a result, taxpayers face difficulties and the performance of the entire system is affected. ✅ Recommendation: A better strategy for the FBR is to introduce separate modules for different tax services, for example: Separate portal for filing Income Tax Returns Separate section for Sales Tax Returns and Digital Invoicing Separate section for NTN and New Registration The advantage of this is that if a glitch occurs in any one section, only that section will be affected, while the rest of the system will continue to function regularly. This way, the sustainability of the system, user-friendly environment, and technical stability can be ensured.
