Many of the authors who come to me struggle to understand the difference between proofreading and editing - and I can see why. Both look for issues with grammar, punctuation, spelling, missing or incorrect words, incorrect formatting, problematic line breaks, etc. What else could there possibly be? Of course editing (particularly fiction editing) looks for a load more things (tone, flow, pace, character growth etc.), but at the beginning of the process, an author can't see what these things are. The best explanation I can give authors is that the two processes happen at different times. The editing comes first and addresses all the issues outlined above. The proofreading comes after the editing is finished, and checks that none of the issues have been missed or incorrectly addressed. Cambridge University Press has called academic publishing “a critical juncture” - and they’re right. It’s not breaking yet, but it’s close. For decades, academics have been paid next to nothing for their research, while universities are charged eye-watering prices just to access it. Publishers profit. Institutions strain. Authors lose. The system has become a paradox: those who create the knowledge can barely afford to read it. Open access was meant to fix this, but it’s turned into a new paywall, the “pay to publish” model. Those with funding can share their work, those without stay invisible. It’s dressed as progress, but it’s still inequity in new clothes. Add in the flood of AI-generated research papers and the pressure to publish at speed, and it’s no wonder the integrity of academic work is under threat. We don’t need more reports. We need reform - honest, structural reform that values the people producing knowledge as much as the platforms profiting from it. Academic publishing shouldn’t be an endurance test. It should be a fair exchange of ideas, access and respect. Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe delivered an outstanding talk, excellent as always. The title was “The History of the Future of Libraries” examining how predictions about the “death of libraries” have been a constant refrain but have never come to pass. Nevertheless, these predictions have continually pushed libraries to adapt and make changes.
