Six attorneys with decades of combined experience working in the U.S. Agency for International Development announced Wednesday that they were launching their own law firm, Mission Driven Counsel LLP, part of a growing trend of former federal workers leveraging recent job losses to start new businesses. The sextet - Richard Burns, Sergiu Troie, Martha Dye, Samantha Glover Ferreira, Ronald O. Wietecha and Jonathan Ng - will continue focusing on issues they have dedicated their careers to — working with stakeholders to continue humanitarian assistance compliance programs, international development missions and partnering with multilateral organizations and governments. These groups take advantage of low business creation barriers and opaque financial reporting laws by relying on lawyers, consultants and “enablers” to navigate the legal structure, said Erica Hanichak, deputy director of the Financial Accountability & Corporate Transparency, or FACT Coalition, an anti-money laundering organization. “Sometimes these enablers are witting partners. Sometimes, in addition to worrying about the existential questions, you need to figure out the mundane. How do you make sure that products and services you buy (and AI tools are products for businesses) are actually safe and work as advertised -- or at the very least the risks are properly disclosed? Turns out product liability law (with the occasional helping hand of agency oversight) has been doing this for centuries. Not perfect (hence the need for some federal oversight), but a good place to start.

Kevin Schaul and Shira Ovide have an excellent write up this morning in the The Washington Post looking at recent work Sam Manning and Tomás Aguirre did on #AI exposure that my crew at The Brookings Institution wrote up as a brief. Kevin and Shira do a really nice job detailing the novel part of the analysis which focuses on which workers may be most and least able to adapt to AI, given various socioeconomic traits. They capture exactly our suggestion that while many will be "exposed" to AIs fewer (often clerical and administrative workers; often women) will struggle to shift into other good-paying work if AI destroys their jobs. Yet what I like best about Kevin and Shira's piece is how thoughtfully it contextualizes our particular labor-market analysis amid the broader AI prediction business. Kevin and Shira provide really good perspective on the fact that much AI-related work--say on labor market trends--amounts to "useful but fallible best guesses," even when the methodologies are hard core and rigorous. And the Post reporters are not wrong about the result of so much well intentioned but often contradictory work. As they write: "A flood of sometimes conflicting analyses shows the yawning gap between what is known about how AI is changing work and everyone's understandable hunger for certainty. The divide lets Americans, business leaders, and policymakers cheery-pick their preferred narratives." That's a genuine problem. Kevin and Shira are right to reference researcher Jed Kolko for declaring AI labor-market research inconclusive with key questions "unanswered." And yet, having observed the field for a while, and participated in it from time to time, would say that while the #AI predictions industry has some faults, it's also provided more clarity than many acknowledge. Good research and reporting over time is how insights come into focus, and as for AI's influence on the labor market, much of the debate is directionally suggestive and really valuable. In this piece, my colleagues Michael Wray, D. Michael Kaye, Jeffrey Orenstein, and I examine the Trump Administration’s new America’s Maritime Action Plan (MAP), a broad industrial-policy/national-security blueprint aimed at rebuilding U.S. shipbuilding capacity, expanding the U.S.-flag fleet, modernizing maritime regulation, and strengthening the workforce needed to support it. Here, we break down MAP’s principal pillars, highlight several of its most consequential recommendations, and consider what may come next for industry. Exciting times for crypto policy on Capitol Hill!   We are currently seeing bipartisan momentum on two critical pieces of legislation that could shape the future of digital assets in the U.S.: ✅ The CLARITY Act cleared key House committees with support from both sides of the aisle—offering much-needed guardrails around custody and market structure. ✅ The GENIUS Act is now poised to advance in the Senate, also with bipartisan backing, signaling a shared recognition of the need to modernize federal frameworks around blockchain innovation and responsible AI integration.   As someone who spends a lot of time working with stakeholders across the crypto ecosystem and on the Hill, it’s encouraging to see consensus forming around the need for clear, workable rules that provide regulatory certainty in the digital asset space while encouraging innovation.   Grateful to the Members of Congress and staff who continue to lead on these complex issues. ARTICLE: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s $1.2 billion innovation fund, the first multination venture capital initiative in defense technology, announced its first round of deep tech investments in June 2024. Additionally, in January 2025, the European Commission announced its annual allocation to the European Defense Fund, totaling more than $1.15 billion for this year for next-generation defense technologies and innovation. Since 2021, the European Defence Fund has allocated more than $5.7 billion to research and development by the private sector.

What happens when North Korea demonstrably acquires a reliable capability to strike the U.S. mainland with a nuclear weapon? In my latest piece published with Pacific Forum, I examine the risks stemming from a widening strategic gap between Washington, Seoul, and Pyongyang—driven in part by reluctance in Washington and Seoul to recognize a nuclear North Korea and to plan for managing the resulting challenges. If Pyongyang quietly crosses this threshold and catches them unprepared, it could trigger uncoordinated, delayed, and reactive responses under conditions of perceived imminent threat—particularly in the absence of established protocols for coordination with regional partners, such as South Korea and Japan, and for communication with adversarial powers, including China and Russia. https://lnkd.in/gnGV2yTp
