We’re proud to share that Joseph Gauthier, assistant professor in Texas Tech University - WCOE Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas Tech University has been awarded a $736,933 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Basic Energy Sciences Catalysis Science program to study catalyst stability in hydrogen production. Of the total award, $345,026 will support research at Texas Tech, while $391,907 goes to Northwestern University, where Gauthier is collaborating with Linsey Seitz, associate professor of chemical & biological engineering. The project, “Identifying Structure-Property Relationships That Govern Stability and Catalytic Oxygen Evolution Activity on Crystalline and Amorphized IrOₓ”, will explore how the local crystal structure of iridium oxide catalysts affects performance and long-term stability during electrochemical water splitting, a key process in sustainable hydrogen production. By combining advanced computational modeling with insights from real-world catalyst behavior, this work seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice. The findings could support the development of more durable, cost-effective technologies for clean hydrogen fuel and potentially impact other catalytic processes such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen reduction. The Strategic Role of 2D Nanomaterials in Grid Modernization https://lnkd.in/e3uiS3sa Energy Focus article discusses challenges, and opportunities related to 2D material utilization for energy generation, storage, transmission, and distribution that support grid efficiency and energy security. 2D material-enabled technologies are positioned to help catalyze the evolution of current grids into RSGs. Resilience will require modernizing the grid and expanding transmission capacity while increasing the efficiency of current infrastructure to accommodate increased electrification across multiple sectors. By addressing the current obstacles through strategic nanoscience and technology research, comprehensive LCA, and collaborative efforts, new levels of efficiency may be unlocked for efficient energy generation, storage, and transmission. Stakeholders across the RDT&E spectrum can create and engage in focused initiatives to overcome the sourcing, manufacturing, integration, and life cycle barriers. Through innovation and national coordination, the RSG of the future can harness the unique properties of 2D materials to provide affordable, efficient, reliable, and resilient power across the world.

Can clay-hosted Li ores be cost-competitive with brine and pegmatite Li ores in the USA? (chemrxiv.org) Jannis Wesselkaemper, Andrew Haddad and their colleagues at LBNL have posted an early preprint of their DOE-sponsored technoeconomic assessment of the cost-competitiveness of Li claystones compared with brine and pegmatite Li ores in North America. They benchmark levelized production costs for clay extraction against the brine and hard rock projects, as well as global averages. Their findings indicate that clay-based lithium extraction can be between 20% and 100% more expensive, depending on extraction technology and process flow. But they also propose pathways that can improve the cost-competitiveness relative to conventional sources through optimization of major cost drivers such as reagents, power consumption, or processing capital expenditures. They welcome comments on the paper. https://lnkd.in/gXgmCnt9

Associate Professor Dr. Iulian Gherasoiu has co-authored a newly published study in Electrochimica Acta that could help accelerate the transition to clean hydrogen energy. Working alongside collaborators from the University at Albany, the team examined how a new nickel- and molybdenum-based catalyst behaves inside a hydrogen electrolyzer—a key technology for producing clean hydrogen by splitting water. When making the final push to commercialize a technology, it is important to anticipate everything that could go wrong and address the challenges as soon as possible. Because solar cells can be pushed into reverse bias when a panel is partially shaded, my team has been working hard to improve the durability of perovskite solar cells in reverse bias or increase their breakdown voltage so that bypass diodes can be used. Today our manuscript "How non-ohmic contact-layer diodes in perovskite pinholes affect abrupt low-voltage reverse-bias breakdown and destruction of solar cells" came out online in Joule. It can be downloaded for free at https://lnkd.in/gfxemjK9. Congratulations to Samuel Johnson, Daniel Morales, Ryan A DeCrescent, Kell Fremouw, Isaac Gould, Steve Johnston and Axel Palmstrom, Ph.D. for their great work on this project. They have found that the abrupt breakdown commonly seen when perovskite solar cells are held in reverse bias occurs where there are pinholes in the perovskite and weak (thin) spots on the contact layers. In addition to doing everything possible to make pinhole-free perovskite films, we find that conformal, robust contact layers, such as SnOx grown by atomic layer deposition are very helpful for avoiding abrupt breakdown at low voltage and the thermal damage that results from it. Studying miniature diodes with a microprobe station is an excellent way to observe the behavior of devices that do not have any microscopic defects.
