John McWade shared thisGot this note yesterday from a small ceramics shop on Etsy from which I’d ordered a pot two weeks ago: Hello, John, I am here to write you that due to the Russian invasion to my country (I am from Kyiv, Ukraine) I have to update the date when I send your order. I am very sorry about this. I will send the pots as soon as post service starts working. Thank you very much, Anastasiia To which my startled (an understatement) reply was: Omgoodness Anastasiia, are you as calm as you sound? I have no words for what’s happening in your country, but I pray that Ukraine prevail in its resistance. Guard yourself, and don’t even think about my pot, please. All the best to you! 🙏 To which she responded: Dear John, thank you very much for your kind words and your support! I know, it’s been 8 days and I am really surprised how we can forget that these are still the most terrible days of our lifes. We get used to shots, really. I am at outskirts of Kyiv, and constantly listening to how our super heroes do not let Russian columns to enter Kyiv… but it became a part of our life😔 Still I am sure, not for long! They would have to kill all of us if they want this land to be Russian. Thank you very much for your support and prayers, we all really appreciate it, Anastasiia People, I hardly know what to think. Out of a clear blue sky I’m given this unfiltered, un-spun glimpse into the life and mind of a young, everyday Ukrainian in Kyiv as the Russian invasion unfolds around her in real time. I mean, who gets such a thing? What, if anything, can I do with it? I hear in her tone youthful naïveté and life-in-the-balance bravado. But her situation is not theoretical. War is upon her. Here’s a picture and her Etsy shop, which includes a way to message her: https://etsy.me/2JrWzA4 How long the internet will continue to function in Ukraine is of course not known.

John McWade reacted on thisJohn McWade reacted on thisYou always hear about Illions — you know, like million, billion, and trillion. But most people have no idea of what these numbers really mean — they're usually just too big to wrap your head around. Actually, a million isn't that hard: it's a thousand-thousand. (Imagine a group of 1,000… then imagine 1,000 of those groups.) You could print a million dots on a wall poster, and still see each of them. But billions and trillions… Things get out of hand quickly when you start thinking at this scale. ➡️ You could walk a million millimeters in less than an hour, but it takes 10 hours to drive a billion millimeters. A trillion millimeters? That’s 25 times around Earth. ➡️ A million seconds is about a week and a half. A billion seconds is 30 years. A trillion seconds ago, Neanderthals were walking around (30,000 years). ➡️ A million dollars in $100 bills fits into a grocery bag. A billion dollars requires 10 shipping palettes, with bills stacked 6 feet tall. A trillion dollars would fill a fleet of cargo planes. In math notation, a million is 10^6 (a one followed by six zeros). A billion is 10^9, and a trillion is 10^12. But even that pales compared to the 100 trillion (10^14) cells you have in your body, or the almost 10^19 grains of sand on Earth, or approximately 16 x 10^21 stars in the known universe. Illions are fun to play with, but a great challenge to understand.

John McWade reacted on thisJohn McWade reacted on thisThis decision is a hard one to process. 😮💨😞 Despite what may be published in the media and in Internet comments, many dedicated, hardworking, and passionate engineers, technicians, and scientists put many years of effort into building, testing, and operating Starliner. They’re not “hacks” or “incompetent” people - they care deeply about their work, the people who fly on these spacecraft, and their families and friends. They want the astronauts to come home safe. These same people are now practicing and focused on bringing Calypso home safely and successfully. Please take a moment and think about these people and their families before writing that click-bait headline, or the scathing comment online. Ad astra per aspera 🚀❤️🙏🏼 https://lnkd.in/e6u2G3aM

Right Touch Editing • 15K followers
Editors are word people. We know the difference between "utilize" and "use" and "facilitate" and "help." So why do so many of us wing it when we market our editing services? In September at the EFA Bay Area chapter event, I showed attendees something to help them change how they think about marketing: a table of “magic words” that actually move people to action. Words like: ✏️"You" (makes it personal) ✏️"Free" (removes risk) ✏️"Now" (creates urgency) ✏️"Discover" (invites exploration) ✏️"Results" (promises outcomes) ✏️"Save" (addresses pain points) Magic words aren't gimmicks. They’re words that create a desired response in the reader. And when we choose them strategically, we nudge our audience in the direction we want them to go. What Changes When You Use Them Instead of writing "I offer copyediting services for manuscripts," you write "Discover how professional copyediting saves you time and delivers results readers trust." See the difference? One lists what you do. The other speaks directly to what your client gains. The magic words work because they're focused on the audience, not the service. They address benefits, not features. They create urgency without being pushy. Stop Guessing About Your Marketing Message You already know how to choose the right words for your clients' manuscripts. Now apply that same precision to your marketing. In a coaching session, we'll review your current marketing messages and rebuild them using proven frameworks—including the magic words that convert browsers into buyers. Book your coaching session today and discover how the right words transform your marketing: https://zurl.co/S4Fj6 #FreelanceEditing #MarketingForEditors Media Source: https://zurl.co/lvhPb Photo by TheDigitalArtist on Pixabay

Design isn't what you see👀😬 But the truth? What you see is only the tip of the iceberg. Behind every great design lies: 🔹 Hours of research and brainstorming 🔹 Strategic thinking and concept development 🔹 Multiple revisions and refinements 🔹 Skill, effort, and time invested The visible elements—colors, fonts, logos, layouts—are just the surface. The real magic happens beneath: the strategy, the problem-solving, and the creative process that brings it all together. Next time you see a design, remember: there's so much more than meets the eye. 🎨✨ #Design #GraphicDesign #CreativeProcess #DesignThinking #LinkedInPost

Typography is generally considered a blend of both science and art. While there are scientific principles that underpin legibility and readability, the aesthetic and expressive choices in typography are largely subjective and artistic. Typography relies on principles of visual perception and cognitive processing. For example, font size, spacing, and line length can be objectively measured and studied for their impact on readability. Research has investigated the relationship between specific typefaces and readability, particularly in digital environments. The choice of typeface, the manipulation of spacing, and the overall design of a layout are aesthetic decisions that can evoke emotions, convey meaning, and create a particular visual style. There is no single "right" way to apply typography, but there are rules and different designers may make different choices based on their artistic vision and those rules Effective typography requires a balance between scientific principles and artistic expression. Designers need to understand the scientific aspects of readability while also using their artistic judgment to create visually appealing and expressive layouts. Research in areas like neuroscience and cognitive psychology continues to shed light on the impact of typography on human perception and behavior. This research can inform the development of more effective and aesthetically pleasing typographic designs.

This is why typography matters For anyone who thinks typography and kerning (letter spacing) isn’t important … Here’s the difference between going to a reputable business or… this guy. Hire a designer. Not AI. Your brand (and reputation) depend on it. #DesignFails #TypographyMatters #GraphicDesign #animateEverything

Is print design really dead? I recently reached out to a client and shared that their company’s print designs could be improved to make the brand stronger and more effective. Their response surprised me: “This isn’t the 90s anymore. Print design doesn’t work now.” But the data tells a very different story. 📊 USA Print Industry Reality Check Annual market value: ➡️ $80–85 billion USD per year Which means: ➡️ $220–230 million USD worth of print work happens every single day. That’s not nostalgia. That’s demand. Print design isn’t disappearing. It’s still one of the strongest tools brands use to build trust, presence, and credibility. Today, print works best when it’s connected with digital media; QR codes, campaigns, retail experiences, packaging, and brand touchpoints. That’s when design becomes winning design. Print hasn’t lost its power. Print will not disappear. It continues to help brands stand out, feel real, and stay memorable. #branddesigner #branddesign #branddevelopment #printdesign #printdesigner #printdesigner #graphicdesign #graphicdesigner #brandstrategy #BrandStorytelling #designhelp #brandmarketing

The InDesign vs. Canva debate ignores how most small marketing and communications teams work. It’s not a taste or skill issue, it’s a conditions issue. Wedding-cake conditions? Hire a designer to work in InDesign. Ding Dong conditions? Open Canva and keep things moving. The real work is building systems that support different conditions while preserving brand consistency.

Automating InDesign for 25 years, we often get the question "what are InDesign automation best practices?" Well, a good 50% of InDesign automation best practices are simply InDesign best practices. So here's a post by Olav Martin Kvern about what those are. Tomorrow, we'll look at the rest of the picture. https://lnkd.in/esPxYYMA
