About 1 in 5 claims submitted by providers to commercial health insurers in Massachusetts in 2024 were denied, the vast majority for administrative reasons, according to a new report by the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission. The commission found wide variation in the share of claims denied by insurers in Massachusetts. Those shares ranged from 28% by UnitedHealthcare, a major national for-profit company, to 11% by Wellsense, a nonprofit health insurer owned by Boston Medical Center Health System. David Seltz, executive director of the HPC, said that denials for administrative reasons reflect “an overly complex system, and are a burden to clinicians, health plans, and ultimately to patients.” https://ow.ly/rjOT50Y9AMm
