I'm a good driver, but I pulled out right in front of this guy, who of course leaned on his horn... hard. Then, as luck would have it, we pulled into the same store parking lot. Yay! So I knew it was coming… He arranged it so he would be standing in front of his vehicle as I rolled by slowly, looking for a spot to park. There he was, middle finger in the air (big surprise) shoving it aggressively toward me, while yelling. I braked, threw it into reverse, came up beside him, rolled down my window, and... just listened. I let him rant. 'LEARN HOW TO %#%€ing DRIVE FOR #%#!SAKE!' That was probably the nicest thing he said in all of it. When he was done, I said in an even tone that I have perfected for escalations at home: 'You have a right to be mad. I cut you off, and I'm really sorry. I'm usually a pretty good driver, but that was a really stupid mistake and I'm sorry I put us both in danger.' He sort of stuttered, still mad, but visibly trying to process what I'd just said. Then I said 'Thank you for being on the ball, and saving us BOTH today with your quick reflexes.' He literally mumbled 'Geez, just be careful..." and he had his head down and was still adjusting to someone being kind to him... someone who he had just called every name in the book, and F bombed about 500 times in public... loudly. It did shake me up, but not the way it did him. I've found that I'm so much more prepared for the unexpected than the average person. I've also learned, through my son, that everything is a teachable moment, that one should always act with grace and good intention, and that whenever possible, give someone a chance to show their best side. And that's what he did. I was pushing my cart around the store, and all of a sudden there’s a tap on my shoulder. It's angry dude. Only he isn't angry, he’s humble. 'You said sorry to me, but I'm the one who owes you an apology. I had a really bad morning, some bad news at work. Thank you for reminding me that everyone makes mistakes, including me. I acted really badly calling you names and stuff. I'm really sorry for that.' 'Thank you,' I said, and smiled. Then he smiled too, we told each other 'have a nice day' and I think we both probably did just that. Because we both stepped out of our comfort zone to thank someone else for their actions. And it felt... good. My son taught me that. He has taught me patience, and grace. He has taught me that however bad things may be at the moment, there is always something to learn from it, and a chance to do it better the next time." Later that evening Ken Sim (Mayor of Vancouver) and his family treated us to a fabulous dinner capped off with the honor of being “coined” by the Mayor! Now greeting the day with a dramatic sunrise over the airport as we head back to SoCal. Sorry that Karen Caplan missed the dinner, as she was sick in the hotel bed.

But then I met Dr. Wendy Suzuki at ChairWorld. And she reminded me: leadership performance is brain performance. She’s the NYU neuroscientist behind Move Your Body, Transform Your Brain (and the author of Good Anxiety — yes, that title grabbed me too). Here’s the moment that stuck. She asked the room how we felt. “Relaxed.” “Tired.” “Sleepy.” Then she led us through a short, interactive movement exercise. Nothing heroic. Nothing sweaty. Just… enough. She asked again. “Energized.” “Excited.” “Pumped.” Same people. Same room. Same day. Different brain state. That’s the leadership lesson I’m taking straight into my coaching work: Most executive “clarity” issues aren’t IQ issues. They’re state issues. When your brain is under-fueled or dysregulated: **Your working memory shrinks **Your focus fractures **Your emotional control gets expensive **Your decisions get either rushed… or avoided And the fix is often simpler than we want it to be. Tiny inputs. Consistent cadence. Big cognitive return. Here’s one move (pun intended) I’m suggesting to CEOs this week: Pick ONE transition point in your day and attach a 3-minute “brain reset” to it: -before your first meeting -right after a tense conversation -before walking into your leadership team meeting -right before making a high-stakes decision Options: brisk walk, stairs, air squats, mobility, or even a short burst of marching in place. The goal isn’t fitness. It’s cognitive effectiveness. Because if you can reliably change your state, you can reliably change: *how you listen *how you regulate *how you decide *how you lead #marktaylorNYC

Managers stuck: Reporting up instead of owning outcomes Managing activity instead of numbers Waiting for direction instead of driving results Here’s the shift: When middle management is Clear on: What they own (Role Map) What success looks like (3–5 Key Accountabilities) How they’re measured weekly (Scorecard + OTM) They stop being a layer… and start becoming a force multiplier. That’s when: Execution speeds up Leaders get out of the weeds Results become predictable If your managers aren’t consistently hitting numbers, it’s not a motivation issue.
