Waymo said it plans to launch a robotaxi service next year in Dallas, the latest city to be added to the Alphabet-owned company’s growing commercial footprint that already includes Los Angeles and San Francisco. This time around, Waymo is partnering with Avis Budget Group to manage its fleet of all-electric autonomous Jaguar I-Pace vehicles. Avis will handle general depot operations, including charging and maintaining the vehicles. Users will be able to hail a robotaxi through the Waymo app. Waymo has partnered with other companies before, including Uber in Austin and Atlanta and Moove in Phoenix. Avis is the first rental car company to help Waymo manage its fleet. And it’s a partnership that will likely extend to other cities in the future. https://lnkd.in/ed7n4Q8v

Waymo's potential use of in-vehicle camera footage for generative AI and personalized ads raises big questions. Yes, opting out of this is possible, but the intent is still sparking concern. Because while this story specifically relates to Waymo’s robotaxis, it also raises questions about how this technology will be used across the mobility industry - and the risks that come with it. In fleet operations, there is mounting pressure to execute sustainable business models that address long-standing pain points. Driverless technology in trucking will soon be widespread and a necessity, in my opinion. But how cameras and footage collected is used is also an increasing concern. That’s because there’s a stark difference between revenue innovation and encroaching on rider, driver and passersby privacy. Trust is paramount when managing vast fleets and customer interactions. This begs the question: Where do we draw the line between operational efficiency and user surveillance? And who defines it? This isn't just a Waymo issue; it's a pivotal moment for the entire mobility ecosystem. As AI integrates into user experiences, transparency and ethical intent are non-negotiable.
