In this session, we explore how technically “correct” KPIs can still drive the wrong behaviors and outcomes through issues like: Aggregation illusions Metric surrogation Local optimization Short-term bias Drawing from real consulting experience and concepts from behavioral economics, systems thinking, and management science, the focus shifts from dashboard features to something more important: how metrics shape executive behavior, incentives, and strategy. The goal isn’t better reporting — it’s better decisions.

Ginger Grant reposted thisExcellent input to the whole "what the heck is happening to in-person events" discussion. Go. Read it. Please. Many of our existing local and regional community events are shrinking (or are gone). However, a few aren't. We need to get some of the events that are doing quite well, I'm thinking SQLDay in Poland, Techorama, Day of Data Baton Rouge, to break out some teaching sessions on just how to organize and promote an event. I don't think it's a single formula, but I also know the old ways of doing things are not working and we've got to shift. Some are knocking it out of the park. I'd go and talk to them if I was an organizer.Ginger Grant reposted thisEveryone says in-person tech events are dying because: • people can learn on YouTube • AI summarises everything instantly • nobody wants to give up a Saturday anymore I think that’s the wrong diagnosis. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: 👉 The sessions were never the real product. 👉 The hallway track was. (SQLBits tried to productise that this year, and did a good job.) And we’ve spent many years pretending otherwise. At SQLBits this year, I chaired a discussion panel on whether AI will replace data professionals. We had the arguments prepared. The slides ready. The counterpoints lined up. Then 100+ people walked into the room and completely changed the conversation. That’s when it hit me: The most valuable part of conferences isn’t the content anymore. It’s the collision of different perspectives. The disagreement in the corridor. Or an event on stage. The “that’s nonsense” conversation over a beer. (Or in a session if you are talking about AI and Erland Sommarskog is in the room with you and disgrees 😊 cc Erik Darling The random introduction that changes your career six months later. You can stream sessions. You cannot stream: • trust • chemistry • nuance • intellectual friction And yet most community events still market themselves like it’s 2012: “20 sessions!” “Free lunch!” “Sponsor hall!” Meanwhile, attendees are thinking: “Why would I spend money and lose a Saturday to watch something I could get from YouTube at 1.5x speed?” Honestly? They’re right. If events want to survive, they need to stop behaving like content delivery platforms and start behaving like curated conversation engines. That probably means: • fewer lecture-style sessions • more debates and panels • structured networking • mentoring roundtables • sponsors participating in conversations instead of buying banner space • maybe even charging for tickets so people actually turn up (Yes, I said it.) Because free registrations with 50% no-show rates are slowly killing community events. The bigger issue though, a whole generation entered tech remotely. They learned SQL from YouTube. Power BI from Microsoft Learn. Fabric from LinkedIn posts. And increasingly… from AI. Many have never experienced: • hallway conversations • community mentoring • accidental career opportunities • meeting peers in person That social infrastructure is disappearing quietly in front of us. And once it’s gone, rebuilding it will be brutally expensive. The future of tech conferences is probably less about formal education and more about creating the conditions for unexpected conversations and opportunities. The people who understand that will build events worth travelling for. I've watched incredibly accomplished people, people with decades of expertise and strong track records, completely freeze when a chatbot gives them a different answer than their gut. Not pause and consider it. Freeze. We have slowly, quietly started trusting a tool more than ourselves. And I get the appeal. AI sounds confident. It doesn't visibly waver. It produces an answer in seconds with zero hesitation. So we started treating its output like it carries more weight than our own experience and judgment. Then the tool goes down. Or it hallucinates. Or it gives an answer that makes zero sense. And people panic. It's not because they don't know what to do, it's because they forgot they ever did it without it. You were making good decisions before this technology existed. The instincts, the pattern recognition, the ability to read a situation and act on it, that was yours. The robot did not build your judgment. It just got very good at making you question it. We are living through a Self-Trust Recession. High achievers second-guessing instincts they have relied on for years. Leaders crowdsourcing decisions they already know how to make. Innovation slowing down, not because people lack ideas, but because they no longer trust the ideas they have. AI is not the problem. The outsourcing of our own authority is.
