- Instead of assessing the risk of their insured drivers through the study of demographic data, auto insurance underwriters can use this method to (1) understand the risk of their drivers through more direct measurements of actual driving behaviour and (2) assess changes in the individual driver's behaviour against their "peers" in the groups.
- Supervised a graduate student and a software engineer at University of Waterloo for this project.Other creators -

Infrastructure architect with 25+ years scaling distributed systems at companies like Salesforce, Fuze, and AOL. Known for building things that don't break.

At Salesforce, I led the Network Visibility and Telemetry organization managing monitoring infrastructure across global datacenters. I also architected Zookeeper as a Service and hired/trained the team to deliver it. At Fuze, I built fault-tolerant analytics systems on AWS that survived multiple availability zone failures—the only application in the company to achieve that. I also built custom infrastructure-as-code tooling in Ruby to orchestrate the entire AWS environment.

What sets me apart: I actually love the work most senior engineers avoid. Performance tuning, monitoring systems, tracking down bottlenecks, building observability platforms—that's the drudge work I pick up when others won't touch it. I believe you can't architect systems well if you won't get your hands dirty debugging them.

Currently building and operating a production ML platform (face detection, OCR) on hybrid cloud infrastructure—keeping my hands in real systems.

Core expertise: AWS infrastructure, monitoring & observability, performance optimization, distributed systems (Kafka, Zookeeper, Elasticsearch, HBase, Hadoop), datacenter automation, operational reliability, Python/Ruby.
