Hiring in the architecture world isn’t easy. There are quite a few hurdles that firms regularly run into, such as: 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: Architecture roles require a specific blend of technical, creative, and software skills (AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, SketchUp, etc.), making the talent pool relatively narrow. 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐭 & 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐃𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬: Architecture projects are highly collaborative. Candidates must not only have the skills but also fit into the team’s workflow and culture. Finding someone with both hard and soft skills takes time. 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭: Large global firms, boutique design studios, and even tech companies compete for the same top-tier architectural talent. The best candidates are often passive. 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐭𝐲: Assessing portfolios can be subjective and time-consuming. Recruiters and hiring managers must judge not just aesthetic quality but also the candidate’s role in the project, technical execution, and relevance to the firm’s style and goals. PDQ has been an extraordinarily helpful tool as of late. With a few scripts GPT and I hammered out, I am able to find all the systems on our network with out of date C++ Libraries installed(PDQ Dynamic group) and set those for updates. Each teammate is allowed to defer using a branded script that asks if it is OK to install. +If there is no response it times out and sends a reply canceling the install. +If the user cancels to defer it records which user and system +If the user Clicks OK it proceeds to check the installed versions and if it is less than the current target, update the C++ Libraries. +A final install will check what systems still haven't been installed, and force install at the end of the week. I am eager to get into Entra and Intune on Azure and see if those match up to PDQs capabilities to manage installations and Revit INI updates!

Architects: RFPs and RFQs are reactive. → You can’t communicate with your client. → You can’t effectively present your value. → You can’t focus client relations. → You can’t plan ahead. They reduce architects to a rubric score. Or just a number (the fee). And they contribute to the commoditization of the industry by forcing a race to the bottom. In what world does zero communication, zero consultation, zero rapport, and zero control prior to selection create healthy relationships that produce the best outcomes for clients, communities, and end-users? Architects should absolutely be doing projects that run through the RFP/RFQ process. But the process needs reform. More communication. More relationships. More value. Estimating software like Bluebeam and Planswift is a huge help, but remember - tools are just that, tools. The best estimators use their experience and critical thinking alongside software to deliver accurate, competitive bids. Relying too much on software without understanding the project can cost you - and your company - dearly. Not long ago, I was asked to help fill a transportation engineering role. The internal posting called for Civil 3D experience. But I knew that didn’t line up, as the state they were looking to hire in used microstation for DOT roadway design, so I asked to speak directly with the hiring manager. Within five minutes, it was clear they needed MicroStation and OpenRoads, not Civil 3D. It’s a small example, but it speaks to a larger pattern I’ve seen working both internally and externally. And that is… When HR teams are supporting 30+ open roles and toggling between mechanical, electrical, and civil specs, it's easy to miss the nuance that matters to experienced engineers. When you’re hiring technical talent, you can’t afford to be vague. Engineers don’t waste time on guesswork. If they see a posting that doesn’t match the tools they actually use, they assume you’re not the right fit, or worse, that you don’t know what you’re doing. That’s why I always make sure to always communicate with the hiring lead. Not to bypass anyone, I loop in HR/TA, but to help the team attract the right person with clarity the first time. One word in a job post, “Civil 3D” versus “MicroStation” can make or break whether the right engineer sees themselves in the role. If you’re serious about bringing in top tier talent, you can’t leave the spec to chance.

I’ve used every design software out there. AutoCAD. SketchUp. Revit. You name it. But after 30 years, I still start every project with pen and paper. Here’s why: A hand sketch reveals ideas faster than any 3D render. Clients connect more deeply when they see your thought process live. It keeps me creative and less “ctrl+z,” more intuition. It's a craft. A discipline. A conversation starter. Sketching isn't old-school. It’s soul school. And in a world obsessed with tech, that human touch is what sets designers apart. If you’re hiring a designer, ask to see their first sketch. It’ll tell you more than a full render ever could.
