In this week's Podnews Weekly Review, our special guest is Alberto Betella, the co-founder of RSS.com, who has a PhD in Affective Computing (aka Emotion AI). Alberto talks about what he thinks the podcast industry should do to counter the AI slopcasters. He has proposed the new Podcasting 2.0 AI Disclosure Tag. <podcast:ai>. This tag is used to indicate whether and how artificial intelligence was used in the creation of the podcast or episode. Alberto has also built the website "Should I Disclose AI in My Podcast?" https://lnkd.in/ekWp9CNq to help podcasters determine if they should tag their podcast/episode as AI. James Cridland and I also talk about: 1. Apple gets itself in a jam with spam. It’s easier to get new shows into Apple Podcasts; but that also means it’s easier to push spam into it. Apple Podcasts is being flooded by spam, although it requires AI disclosure AI but does not support any AI tag. The EU AI Act's Article 50 takes effect in August 2026, with fines up to €15M or 3% of global turnover 2. Is iHeart Sirius about a merger? Why is iHeartMedia in preliminary talks with SiriusXM about an acquisition? A deal like this would be massive for the audio world and comes as radio is losing ground to podcasts. From a podcast point of view, merging the two would mean one network with 3,422 shows; representing around 207 million downloads+views a month. Spotify would remain bigger. The deal would force the hand of the UK’s Global. 3. Why is Spotify getting on its bike?  Why is Spotify putting Peloton Interactive video classes on its platform? 4. Libsyn adds Spotify Video Libsyn has announced that it can now distribute video to Spotify and Apple soon. Libsyn is now an ad-platform first and host second, like Acast. 5. APAC Apple Video Host Firstory is officially the first hosting platform in Asia-Pacific to support Apple Podcast video. 6. Agents.MD is the new Robots.txt Podnews published an llms.txt file and an agents.md file on their website to give hints to AI agents on how to use their website. This is 7. Spotify AI Spotify integrates with Claude to deliver personalised audio discovery. 8. Beehiiv AI beehiiv added AI analytics features to its podcast hosting service. 9. YouTube AI YouTube added ‘Ask YouTube’, a new way to search. 10. Patreon Portal App Patreon opens discovery tools to boost podcast growth, moving from an attention economy to a connection economy. 11. Micropayments Sam talks about why he thinks Stablecoins could replace Bitcoin for direct-to-fan micropayments. 12. Full-Screen Video Playback TrueFans added a new full-screen video experience. I like the way this piece from Paul digs into the reality (and problem) of LLMs / AI coding tools re-enforcing existing preferences (read: biases) in terms of the frameworks that they will use by default when churning out code for us, and the consequent difficulty (and significant time lag) in getting new frameworks and new techniques to come into contention. It wasn't like this in my day, you know - we picked our own favourite frameworks and took on new tooling at the drop of a hat, heedless of the future toll that the "hipster tax" would take on us when we realised that shiny and new was not necessarily stable and supportable...

Anthropic is making it easier to switch to its Claude AI from other chatbots with an update that brings Claude’s memory feature to users on the free plan, along with a new prompt and dedicated tool for importing data from other chatbots. These upgrades could allow users who have been using rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini to quickly copy the data their preferred AI has collected on them and bring it over to Anthropic’s chatbot. Good thread from Sam Sethi this week. Worth the read. Here's where I land on it. Studio71 was worth $425 million in 2017. Last week ProSieben sold it to a 24-month-old creator shop with $50 million in the bank, then warned shareholders about a revenue downgrade. Top ten US podcast network. Fourteen billion monthly views. Two decades of advertiser relationships. Sold for parts. That's the actual story this week. Not the disclosure tag. Not the slop. Not the spam in Apple. The story is that the people running audio are still trying to protect a finite pile while standing in front of an infinite one, and the market is starting to mark it down in public. Napster didn't kill the record business. Five years of suing twelve year olds killed the record business while Steve Jobs built iTunes in the room next door. Cabs didn't lose to Uber. They lost the second they decided dispatch was a moat instead of a service. Every single time the tool moves into the hands of the audience, the people who built a business on friction lose their minds, and the people building for what's coming eat the entire market. I'm a creative. I made records for Benny Medina, Herb Alpert, Ray Charles, and yes, Color Me Badd. I use AI every day. Suno is impressive and Suno is not a musician. It will never replace Steve Maslow. It will never replace Quincy Jones. It will never replace Michael Jackson. It will never replace Jack Antonoff. It will never replace Kendrick Lamar. It will replace the people who were already getting outworked by an intern with a free trial, and some of them are quoted in this thread. Alberto's tag is fine. Tag whatever you want. The explicit tag has worked for twenty years. But the panic underneath the tag isn't about listeners. It's about people who built careers on scarcity watching the scarcity walk out the door. The creator economy has ten revenue lines. Programmatic, host read, sponsorship, product placement, appearance fees, live, tickets, merch, licensing, localization. AI threatens none of them for anyone with chops. It threatens the middlemen charging rent on access, and good. Studio71 didn't lose $375 million in value because of AI. It lost it because the people in charge spent a decade managing a finite pile instead of building toward an infinite one. That's the lesson sitting on the table this week, and almost nobody in audio is reading it out loud. The winners of the next decade are going to stop counting their slice and start baking more pies. Everyone else is going to spend five years writing disclosure tags for an audience that already left.

This list of Claude plugins - bundles of customisable 'skills' and other files that extend/focus its capabilities - is surprisingly difficult to find via a Google search. It's growing at speed - at the end of January, there were just 11 compatible with its Cowork tool (general work rather than coding). There are now 26 'verified' ones - and dozens more that currently depend on the more mature Claude Code environment. (Further unverified examples are available elsewhere). For those tracking these things, it's worth noting that you can see the total number of installs for some of the older skills. NB if you’re still getting to grips with Claude, you install them and other ‘skills’ via the new Customise facility in the main menu. Peacock posts $552 million loss as subscribers rise to 44 million. Taken together the data tells a very specific story. The platform is still growing its audience, and it is still paying for that growth. Neither point should be dismissed, and neither is unusual for a streaming service that has not yet pivoted fully from scale to optimisation. Within Comcast, Peacock remains firmly in its investment phase. Costs are front-loaded around content, sports rights and platform reach, while monetisation follows later, in theory. The increased loss matters because it defines the length and cost of the runway, but it does not automatically imply that profitability is unattainable. The more useful question is not whether Peacock can move to profit, but how and on what terms. In theory, every major streaming service should be capable of reaching profitability if its offering, pricing and cost base are kept in balance. That does not mean every service becomes a category leader. Rankings will exist. Some platforms will always outperform others on margins. Profitability and dominance are not the same thing. What matters is whether a service can reach a sustainable equilibrium, with stable subscribers, improving ARPU through advertising and tiering, disciplined content spend, and predictable cash outflows. Peacock’s hybrid model, combining subscription and advertising with strong sports and event-led engagement, makes that equilibrium plausible. It is not guaranteed, but it is credible. The service does not need to win the streaming wars to succeed. It needs to settle into a position where revenue growth and costs come back into alignment. Context also matters. Within Comcast, streaming losses are being absorbed by reliable cash generation elsewhere in the group. That gives management time to refine the model rather than chase abrupt fixes. That time is a strategic asset. The signals worth watching are not the headline loss alone, but the trajectory beneath it. It's about when losses peak, whether they begin to narrow, how ARPU develops across ad-supported tiers, how disciplined content spend becomes once scale is established, and how churn behaves outside major sports windows. Read that way, this announcement is not a warning siren. It is a progress marker. The investment phase is still underway, costs remain elevated, and execution now matters more than expansion for its own sake. Peacock may not top the streaming league tables, it doesn't need to. If it can reach profitability in balance with its offering, it will have done exactly what a streaming service inside a diversified media group is meant to do, support the wider ecosystem rather than dominate it. Streaming success is not binary, and it shouldn't be read as winner-takes-all. One of the points I emphasised in my last two talks - for the CFO Symposium Melbourne and here at Anant National University - was the rapidly expanding "horizon" of agents. It's a measure of long they can progress toward a goal before they stumble, grown from seconds in 2023 to hours today - opening the door to the realisation of powerful agents.
