As AI evolves and becomes more integrated into the work of government, it has the potential to reshape the practice of diplomacy. Nonpartisan institutions that rely on facts and research to shape public understanding are being left behind — not because they lack insight, but because they lack presence where it matters most. Today’s media ecosystem rewards authenticity, resonance, and networked participation — not credentials, citations, or carefully crafted op-eds. Institutions can’t afford to treat audience engagement as an afterthought. Renee DiResta and I just published a new paper with the Carnegie Endowment: "For Expertise to Matter, Nonpartisan Institutions Need New Communications Strategies." We argue that the old top-down comms playbook — press releases, Sunday shows, reports behind paywalls — isn’t just outdated, it’s increasingly speaking only to a niche audience. Woke up early to join MS NOW's Morning Joe broadcast for a conversation about the contract dispute between Anthropic and the Department of Defense. My take: the Department is reasonable in wanting flexibility in how it uses the technology it buys, but it agreed to a much more restrictive set of terms less than a year ago. To now threaten to designate Anthropic as a "Supply Chain Risk" or to invoke the Defense Production Act is a completely unnecessary and unreasonable escalation that threaten the survival of a leading US AI firm would serve as a terrible deterrent against tech companies working with the DOD in the future.

Undersecretary of War for Research & Engineering Emil Michael has ruthlessly prioritized six critical technology areas and put contested logistics at the center. This reflects a clear understanding from OUSW(R&E) that future operations hinge on sustaining forces when runways and ports are unreliable and when every route, connector, and hub is persistently targeted across the tyranny of distance. Anyone working on the contested logistics problem understands that this is a system-level challenge in which platforms, components, networks, policy, and the industrial base must align to keep logistics running. There will not be a single silver bullet solution, and it will take coordinated effort across the ecosystem to build a resilient web of options rather than a handful of chokepoints. Poseidon Aerospace is contributing to that web with Heron and Egret, platforms that move meaningful mass from austere locations that depend on minimal fixed infrastructure to keep our forces supplied. https://lnkd.in/eaPeT_zP
