A Lead Systems Engineer at a mid-sized aerospace subcontractor was staring down a midnight deadline. They were finalizing an urgent RFP response for a Department of Defense contract involving next-generation drone telemetry. They had hundreds of pages of highly technical schematics, supply-chain logistics, and component specifications that needed to be synthesized into a cohesive executive summary for the bid. Exhausted and fighting the clock, they did what any resourceful professional would do: they uploaded the raw technical PDFs into a popular, public Generative AI tool to draft the summary. They didn't check the data-retention settings. They just needed it done. It took less than a minute. The summary was brilliant. The bid was submitted with hours to spare. But what that engineer didn't realize is that they had just committed a massive federal security breach. By uploading those specs into a public chatbot, they transmitted Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) to a commercial server. In a matter of seconds, they violated NIST 800-171 compliance and potentially triggered a severe ITAR breach. Because public AI models train on user inputs and store data in massive, distributed data centers, the proprietary blueprints for US military logistics were just handed over to a third-party commercial server lacking the required FedRAMP or DoD compliance. It wasn't espionage. It was just a tight deadline. The defense industrial base is being told to move faster, bid smarter, and adopt AI to stay competitive. We were knee-deep in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools, building models for SOCOM — and we hit a wall. The tools were solid for what they were designed to do. But every time we asked "can it do this?" the answer was the same: not without a workaround, not at speed, not at scale. Meanwhile, AI was answering those same questions with "yes, and here's what else." So we made the hard call. We pivoted from MBSE tooling to Applied AI. We didn't abandon what made us effective. We kept the systems thinking discipline. The rigorous requirements traceability. The engineering rigor that our customers depend on. Supporters say the reform would set firm timelines, limit unnecessary issue papers, and expand delegated approvals so agency engineers can focus on real safety—not administrative choke points.
