About
I'm a strategy consultant, executive coach, and keynote speaker (with deep experience in virtual presentations) who has worked with clients including Google, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, Fidelity, Yale University, the IMF, and the World Bank.
I've been named one of the Top 50 Business Thinkers in the World 3x by Thinkers50, and the #1 Communication Coach in the World by the Marshall Goldsmith Leading Global Coaches Awards, as well as one of the Top 10 Communication Professionals in the World by Global Gurus.
I write regularly for the Harvard Business Review, FastCompany, and Business Insider, and am the author of several books, including the WSJ bestseller "The Long Game" (Harvard Business Review Press, 2021), as well as "Entrepreneurial You," which was named "one of the most important business books of the year" by Inc. magazine and one of the Top 5 Books of the Year by Forbes.
I also wrote "Reinventing You" and "Stand Out," which Inc. magazine declared the #1 Leadership Book of the Year and Forbes named one of the Top 10 Business Books of the Year.
The New York Times was kind enough to call me an “expert at self-reinvention and helping others make changes in their lives.”
For three years, I hosted a weekly video interview show for Newsweek. I also teach for Columbia Business School's executive education program, and in the past have taught for Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, IE Business School (Spain), HEC-Paris, Smith College Exec. Education, Babson College Exec. Education, and the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler School of Business. I'm a member of Marshall Goldsmith's MG100 program, which brings together the world's top executive coaches, as well as an angel investor and startup advisor.
Previously, I worked as a journalist, where I was delighted to win two New England Press Association awards; a presidential campaign spokesperson; and a producer of a multiple Grammy-winning jazz album. I also invest in Broadway productions, and am a lyricist in BMI's Tony-Award winning Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Advanced Workshop. How do you influence and persuade others without being manipulative or coercive?
One important factor in building trust is to be transparent and honest about your intentions. If you're upfront about why you want someone to take a certain action or adopt a particular perspective, it's more likely that they'll be receptive to your message. For instance, if you want to meet with someone to ask them to invest in your company, don't pretend it's a social visit and then blindside them with an ask. Instead, be clear from the beginning why you want to meet, so they can opt in or out with the benefit of full information.

How do you influence and persuade others without being manipulative or coercive?
Another strategy is to frame your message in a way that resonates with the other person's values and interests. By understanding what's important to them, you can tailor your message to appeal to those factors, rather than relying solely on your own perspective. If you're trying to get someone to purchase tickets to a charity fundraiser, for instance, and you know that they care about women's equality, you can emphasize that element in your pitch. For example, your non-profit may be focused on environmental issues, but perhaps climate change has a disproportionate impact on women in a certain area, so helping to fight it will simultaneously empower women.

The Long Game
Harvard Business Review Press
It’s no secret that we’re pushed to the limit. Today’s professionals feel rushed, overwhelmed, and perennially behind. So we keep our heads down, focused on the next thing, and the next, without a moment to breathe.
How can we break out of this endless cycle and create the kind of interesting, meaningful lives we all seek?

Today’s professionals feel rushed, overwhelmed, and perennially behind. So we keep our heads down, focused on the next thing, and the next, without a moment to breathe.
How can we break out of this endless cycle and create the kind of interesting, meaningful lives we all seek?
Just as CEOs who optimize for quarterly profits often fail to make the strategic investments necessary for long-term growth, the same is true in our own personal and professional lives. We need to reorient ourselves to see the big picture so we can tap into the power of small changes that, made today, will have an enormous and disproportionate impact on our future success. We need to start playing The Long Game.
As top business thinker and Columbia University professor Dorie Clark explains, we all know intellectually that lasting success takes persistence and effort. And yet so much of the relentless pressure in our culture pushes us toward doing what’s easy, what’s guaranteed, or what looks glamorous in the moment. In The Long Game, she argues for a different path. It’s about doing small things over time to achieve our goals—and being willing to keep at them, even when they seem pointless, boring, or hard.
In The Long Game, Clark shares unique principles and frameworks you can apply to your specific situation, as well as vivid stories from her own career and other professionals’ experiences. Everyone is allotted the same 24 hours—but with the right strategies, you can leverage those hours in more efficient and powerful ways than you ever imagined. It’s never an overnight process, but the long-term payoff is immense: to finally break out of the frenetic day-to-day routine and transform your life and your career. -
Entrepreneurial You
Harvard Business Review Press
What does it take to create the career you want? It’s no secret that the world of work has changed, and we’re shifting toward an ever more entrepreneurial, self-reliant, work-from-wherever-you-are economy. That can be a liberating force, and many professionals dream of becoming independent, whether by starting their own businesses, becoming consultants or freelancers, or developing a sideline.

But there’s a major obstacle professionals face when they contemplate taking the leap: how to actually make money doing what they love. You may have incredible talent and novel ideas, but figuring out how to get started, building your reputation in a new realm, developing multiple revenue streams, and bringing in a steady flow of new clients can be a daunting prospect.
In Entrepreneurial You, it’s my goal to provide you with a blueprint for professional independence, including insights and advice on building your brand, monetizing your expertise, and extending your reach and impact online. You’ll learn the necessary elements and concrete tactics for entrepreneurial success. In the book, I share the stories of entrepreneurs of all kinds―from consultants and coaches to podcasters, bloggers, and online marketers―who have generated six- and seven-figure incomes, as well as my own insights from building a high six-figure solo consulting business.
This book will be your hands-on guide to building a portfolio of revenue streams, both traditional and online, so that you can liberate yourself financially and shape your own career destiny.
Whether you’re an experienced entrepreneur looking to expand your revenue streams, an aspiring side hustler starting your business, or a happily-settled corporate executive looking for creative new ideas about how to think entrepreneurially, my goal is to teach you the strategies you need to succeed and build the career and life you want. -
Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build a Following Around It
Portfolio/Penguin
Too many people believe that if they keep their heads down and work hard, they will be lauded as experts on the merits of their work. But that’s simply not true anymore. To make a name for yourself, you have to capitalize on your unique perspective and knowledge and inspire others to listen and take action. But becoming a “thought leader” is a mysterious and opaque process. Where do the ideas come from, and how do they get noticed?
