Coaching and Mentoring in 2025 I continue to have amazing experiences helping MedTech companies prepare for commercialization of innovation with strong impact to advance patient care at Penn Health-Tech The Roux Institute at Northeastern University and MedTech Commercialization Institute - (of particular personal importance as MCI's mission is to help Israeli MedTech startups). 3 key tips + 2 foundational principles I have learned about effective coaching: 1. Nobody cares about you. Coaching is not an opportunity to tell war stories about your personal heroics. I used to like to reflect back to the glory days of the orthopedic juggernaut Synthes. Newsflash - most young entrepreneurs have never even heard of Synthes (acquired in 2012). We are there to help startups accelerate commercialization *today*. 2. Roll up your sleeves but keep your loafers on. Giving advice with no action is not helpful. Nor is doing the work for the startup. The magic lies in the middle - ask leading questions, provide resources, reference best practices, jump in if they hit a sticking point. 3. Step out of your comfort zone. As a coach / mentor - you should be learning as much from startups as they learn from you. I am working with a startup that hit a sticking point related to healthcare economics - an area in which I have competence, not expertise. It's been a valuable experience for me to take my proficiency to the next level while providing critically-important value to the startup. 4. Foundational Principle I - Set the example You are part of the team. Entrepreneurs will reflect your energy and drive. In medtech sales we learn to treat everyone like they are the most important person in the hospital. Apply the same level of engagement, passion, and positivity to the teams you are coaching as you would to the most senior CEO or VC investor. 5. Foundational Principle II - Keep the patient in the middle Coaches, mentors, investors tend to fixate on details around economics, incentives, workflows. All of these are important. However - the foundation of all MedTech innovation is advancing patient care. If that isn't the first thing we all think of when we get out of bed - we need to recalibrate. The overall deal count may be down, but the average size of investment rounds is increasing, signaling a "flight to quality" among investors. Here are three essential trends I am seeing which are defining where the smart money is moving in medical technology: The Surge in Surgical and Interventional Devices Surgical devices and tools have firmly established themselves as the hottest destination for medtech capital. This sector is attracting a disproportionate amount of investment value. Why it Matters: Investors are prioritizing tangible, hardware-based solutions that offer clear clinical and commercial pathways, often supporting later-stage companies that are nearing or entering pivotal trials. Case in Point: Companies focused on complex cardiovascular or neurosurgical tools are securing large, nine-figure rounds to accelerate development and market entry. AI as the New Medical Mandate Investment is soaring in companies where AI is core to the solution, not just an add-on feature. The convergence of AI and healthcare is creating new efficiencies and driving significant funding. Key Focus Areas: AI for Workflow Automation: Tools for documentation, coding, and reducing physician burnout. AI Diagnostics & Decision Support: Platforms that analyze medical images or patient data to improve clinical outcomes and speed up diagnosis. A "Late-Stage" Capital Concentration Venture capital is increasingly focusing on mature, later-stage companies (Series B, C, and beyond). This trend is a direct result of a slower exit environment (fewer IPOs and M&A deals) and a desire to fund companies closer to commercialization. 30+ Countries Are Coming to LSI Asia ‘26. One of the things I’m most excited about right now is seeing how global LSI Asia has become. This year we’re bringing together leaders from more than 30 countries for three days in Singapore focused on Medtech innovation, investment, and partnerships. Here’s what the attendee mix currently looks like: Geographic -- • North America: 40% • Southeast Asia: 21% • Europe: 17% • Australia / New Zealand: 10% • East Asia: 9% • Middle East: 2% • Latin America: 1% Attendees -- • Investors & Strategics: 38% • Innovators: 30% • Service Providers: 28% • Other: 4% What really jumps out to me is the concentration of investors and strategics showing up. About 1 out of every 3 people in the room will be an investor or strategic. That changes the energy of the meeting in a big way. The conversations are more intentional. The networking gets more productive. The opportunity to create real partnerships goes up dramatically. We’re seeing a strong mix of returning LSI attendees along with a lot of first-time participants from across Asia and around the world.
