A new federally funded national institute at Carnegie Mellon University will help mathematicians use artificial intelligence to make mathematical reasoning faster and more reliable in solving pressing challenges across science, security and the economy. With an investment from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and additional support from the Simons Foundation, the Institute for Computer-Aided Reasoning in Mathematics (ICARM) — one of just six mathematics institutes across the U.S. to receive NSF support — will help researchers modernize mathematical reasoning to strengthen real-world problem solving in domains like cybersecurity, finance, space and health care. “The institute will focus on the mathematical components of these tasks and use the technologies to support mathematical reasoning and computation in all its applications,” said Jeremy Avigad, director of ICARM and professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Philosophy at CMU. For more than 40 years, NSF has funded Mathematical Sciences Research Institutes to serve as catalysts for U.S. research in mathematics and statistics and to produce mathematical innovations to rapidly address new and emerging challenges and opportunities. "From underpinning new encryption standards that will protect our information from quantum computers to navigating the intricate global supply chains that enable manufacturing and trade, the mathematical sciences are a driving force behind countless aspects of our national security, economy and quality of life," says NSF Assistant Director for Mathematical and Physical Sciences David B. Berkowitz. "The NSF Mathematical Sciences Research Institutes will continue to empower U.S. mathematical scientists to punch into promising new areas of exploration."

Researchers at Johns Hopkins APL have shown that a quantum algorithm can accelerate a key task in online information analysis that traditional computers struggle to perform efficiently. https://jhuapl.link/06t The team demonstrated that by using a quantum version of a “random walk,” a process that uses random steps to explore a mathematical space, they were able to analyze relationships faster and more effectively. Superposition — the ability of quantum bits to take two values simultaneously — gives quantum computing a distinct edge in this kind of large-scale analysis. “Today, there are only a limited number of use cases where quantum computing offers a clear speed advantage,” said Kevin Schultz, assistant manager for APL’s Alternative Computing Paradigms program. “Our team at APL is applying quantum computing to mission-critical national security challenges.
