A couple of months ago I started a personal project creating animated visualizations of Mayer’s 12 Principles of Multimedia Learning. These are guidelines on how to structure elements in multimedia instruction to maximize learning. While these principles were created for eLearning, I found that they apply as well to explainers and instructional videos. I want to share each principle individually with some practical tips on how to apply them for explainer videos. First the Coherence Principle which states that learning is more effective when unnecessary information is excluded from the presentation. This principle is about drawing attention to what is important and removing everything else that might distract from it. How do you apply this? 1. Only include images, text and narration that are relevant to what is being discussed. 2. Remove unnecessary animation that draw too much attention. 3. Remove distracting sound effects or use them more subtly. 4. Use simple images, icons or infographics.

AI agents can now log into Moodle, open your course, and complete and submit assignments automatically including quizzes, discussion replies, essays, everything. This isn’t hypothetical anymore. Perplexity Comet, ChatGPT Atlas, and others can navigate Moodle like a human user. They literally click through the interface and complete the activity for the student. No copy–paste required. No student even has to read the task. This changes everything for online learnings urgently. Institutions, educators, and AI companies need to address this now, not later. We need to discuss assessment and learning more. If AI can now perform the learning actions for the student what does authentic learning environment look like from this point forward? We at GetReal Security are fielding questions about a slew of videos emerging from the shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah College. We have analyzed several of the videos circulating online and find no evidence of manipulation or tampering. At the same time, we are seeing some AI-generated videos of the event that are clearly fake. (I am not linking to the real or fake content; the real content is incredibly graphic and I don't want to give air-time to the fake content). This is an example of how fake content can muddy the waters and in turn cast doubt on legitimate content.

Time travel is real, but no one seems to be talking about it, unless you're a journalist fact-checking Candace Owens’s claims 😎 But this isn’t sci-fi. It’s called The Wayback Machine, an initiative of the Internet Archive that has been capturing snapshots of websites since 1996. Wouldn’t it have been good if you could see what your website looked like in 2005? Or how your competitors positioned themselves before social media was even a thing? Well, you actually can. I recently used The Wayback Machine to revisit the very first website I built for my husband’s business. It looks adorably outdated, but more importantly, some of the pages have been archived! I must have done something right back then. In short, and without tech jargon, The Wayback Machine lets you: – Revisit how your site looked, including fonts, layout, copy, etc. – See what content was visible on which days (and potentially understand why). Was it the headline? The visuals? The topic? The archive leaves clues if you’re paying attention. – Benchmark others (yes, your competitors 👀). – Recover deleted articles, press releases, and web pages — gold for fact-checking. That black bar chart you see in my video shows how often a site was archived. Simply put: more bars = more snapshots. That means a site was structured in a way that made it easier to capture (this isn’t about SEO performance!). I couldn’t help myself, I had to check Air New Zealand (and, naturally, went down a rabbit hole with a dozen other brands). In 2004, they offered Auckland–Sydney flights for $149. In 2025? You might need to auction your airpoints 🤣 And lastly, The Wayback Machine is great for education, with applications in branding, marketing, product strategy, UX design, and journalism, among other fields. Five years after the pandemic hit, California community colleges are still battling one of the most nefarious problems to surface after courses moved online en masse. Criminals continue to find ways to evade various checkpoints in their pursuit of financial aid and other benefits that come with being a college student. These fraudsters — sometimes called ghost students, Pell runners, or straw students — are hitting the system’s central application portal at an alarming rate. While spam filters stop many of them, colleges are spending hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars finding further fraud. Instructors, as the last line of defense, are struggling to balance due diligence, good teaching practices, and student support. The fact that California has yet to find a solution raises an unsettling specter. Could this problem become pervasive in other states? And will the widespread use of generative AI make it even harder for instructors to distinguish scammers from students who misuse AI?

When I develop a course, I like to take what I have from the storyboard into whatever authoring tool I'm using at the time to see how my design holds up to real user interaction. This quick sample of my prototype is messy and wonky in many areas, but it helps me identify design gaps before I get too far ahead. The idea for this course is that a hiker walks up to the trailhead, scans a QR code to access information about the hike, and then they can also get a little education about dehydration because of the season the hike is in. I like the idea that they can unlock the other hikes once they reach the following trailheads. Before I give my thoughts, I'd love to get your thoughts on this sample prototype!
