📢 NJ makes $10 million available for more towns to participate in regional climate resilience planning. The Resilient NJ program, administered through DEP’s Office of Climate Resilience, will use this round of funding to provide grants of up to $300,000 to municipalities that join other to establish self-identified regions, and then work to develop regional Resilience Action Plans. Grant applications are now available at dep.nj.gov/ocr/resilientnj and are due Wednesday, Oct 29.

🗽 Funding Opportunities for NYC-Based Organizations & Leaders: 🚸 1. The William T. Grant Foundation is actively accepting applications for their Youth Service Capacity-Building Grants. This program supports activities to strengthen the organizational infrastructure of small nonprofit organizations in the five boroughs of New York City that provide direct services to young people ages 5 to 25. The City Parks Foundation is now accepting applications for their NYC Green Fund Grassroots Grant Program. The NYC Green Fund Grassroots grant program is intended to advance the viability of grassroots initiatives across parks and open spaces in all five boroughs and to foster a resilient network of equitable public green spaces. Brooklyn Org has two grant opportunities with deadlines this fall for organizations working in Brooklyn. For their general funding, they fund organizations that advance racial justice and provide critical resources to BIPOC and other groups who have been historically disempowered and discriminated against across Brooklyn. This support is for up to $45,000 over three years. For their microgrants, they fund organizations with budgets of under $100,000. This funding will support organizations not yet eligible for our Strategic Grants or other prizes due to budget requirements. With EDC in flux, Council Speaker Menin builds her own economic development team While the New York City business community is still waiting for Mayor Zohran Mamdani to name a new leader of the powerful Economic Development Corp., City Council Speaker Julie Menin is assembling her own economic development team. The new speaker is shifting her office’s Division of Strategic Partnerships to focus specifically on economic development. It has been renamed the Office for Advancing Partnerships and Economic Expansion, or APEX, and is tasked with “building strategic partnerships and advancing initiatives that expand economic opportunity across the five boroughs.” Menin appointed Joe Daniels, former president and CEO of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, and Lea Goldman, a well-connected journalist and editor, to lead the expanded team. Behind the appointments is Menin’s vision for the council to take a more ambitious approach to governing, and she wants her office to be particularly aggressive on business-related issues. “These appointments help bolster our efforts to take the Council in a new, more proactive direction to deliver results for every resident of the five boroughs,” Menin said in a statement. “Their experience and leadership will help us build stronger partnerships, expand economic opportunity and ensure the Council is equipped to meet the greatest challenges facing our city.”

Thank you Common Good Vermont for hosting the panel discussion on nonprofit shared services this morning! And, thank you incredible panelists for your insights, stories, and advice (Emily Cayer, Cheryl Gilbert, and Nancy Davila). As nonprofits funding is under attack, many nonprofits are considering shared service models. Being proactive and considering models and approaches before being forced to alter operations can be empowering and lead to cost savings. Some key takeaways from the discussion: --Having a clear understanding of the purpose and expectations (both internally within individual organizations and between organizations) of the shared services is key to setting the model up for success. --Organizations of similar mission, size, funding, and operation may find negotiating shared service models easier - though there are examples of models with disparite organizations. --Starting small, with 'easy' operational services can set the collaboration up for success, allow for learning and flexibility, and encourage trust. --Creating a dues structure to pay for the shared services, including someone to manage them, was the most common funding model discussed. There are multiple models out there and we will continue to explore and share tools, templates, case studies!
