What is an ISWC? The International Standard Musical Work Code (ISWC) is a unique, permanent, and internationally recognized reference number that distinguishes your song from every other musical composition around the world. Around the world, organizations use ISWC codes to track and verify information about a composition, like the title, songwriters, its music publishers, and ownership shares.   What are ISWCs used for? Getting an ISWC assigned to your work is vital for tracking the use of your music. If royalties are generated for a performance or purchase of your recording, your ISWC helps collection societies, distributors, digital streaming services, and other organizations know who to pay.   How do you obtain an ISWC code? To obtain an ISWC, you need to register your musical work with a Performing Rights Organization (PRO), like ASCAP or Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI). This can also be done via your administrator. My administrator is Songtrust. Your PRO will then submit the information to CISAC, the organization responsible for assigning ISWCs, which will then assign the code. You cannot directly request an ISWC from CISAC. #ISWC #music #royalties

Very often, after sending a rejection for a music submission, the person comes back asking if there are any other genres needed. While that is perfectly understandable, my advice would be to suppress that reflex. When you commit to submitting something, you should be aware that the recipient is taking you seriously, assuming this is what you are really good at and what you genuinely want to put forward because you believe it is relevant. Switching to a generalist mode usually does not work. It often makes the situation awkward, as it can feel like you are just trying to prolong the conversation while asking for vague directions. To avoid that, always include a reel with your best work, covering all areas you truly excel in. Submissions are typically rejected because the material is not strong enough, the area is already well covered, or projects are already in the pipeline that match exactly what you just sent. Another piece of advice: do not start the first conversation with a genre that is either oversaturated or easy to produce for anyone. Instead, take a look at the catalogue and honestly assess whether you can spot niche areas that may not be covered, or come up with outstanding music that fits the brand and catalogue in terms of production value, creativity, and craftsmanship.

The power of sound in learning. Sound processing supports connection, communication, collaboration and integration of our senses to make sense of the world. Sound processing engages memory, attention and automated responses. Sound processing is a superpower for brain development. It is at the heart of how we learn, build relationships, regulate and thrive. So when it comes to designing learning environments, are we truly giving sound the attention it deserves? In today’s world of constant noise, digital alerts, and addictive scrolling, are we losing the superpower of the sound processing system? Are we overlooking one of our most powerful senses – and the critical role it plays in cognitive function for both children and adults? When Dr Kathryn Murray and I first worked together to research this topic, 2 years ago, there were few people talking about it in early years. It's great to see the topic being discussed more widely. Boogie Mites music activities are informed by the neuroscience evidence showing us that music and movement is a supercharge for the sound processing system. If we equip our early educators and parents with music confidence, knowledge and resources, we contribute to a calm and productive sound environment for optimal development of the sound processing system.
