I like Volunteering in SAE. It gives me two things, an opportunity to learn things in areas that are interesting to me and the feeling of satisfaction after giving back to the organization.
The first project I worked on was reviewing their online course on Design of Experiments for Engineers.
It involved learning various methods of Design of Experiment and how to analyze them. It also involved learning Minitab for Analysis.

The second opportunity that I am currently volunteering on is, developing standards for Light Duty Vehicle Performance and Economy Measurement. Examples are J1634, J2263, J2264, J1711, J2951, J3066 for use by the automotive industry. -

VLSI Floorplanning using Cohort Intelligence Algorithm
• Develop an artificially intelligent model in a way that it learns from itself and generates multiple intermediate solutions to ultimately converge to one optimum solution in MATLAB.

Engine Modeling and Simulation in GT Power – Wayne State University

• Optimize cycle work output and volumetric efficiency as a function of spark timing and intake valve opening timing over speed range in a 4-cylinder gasoline engine.
• Found that with speed increase there is a need to advance spark timing to achieve best performance.
• Intake valve opening time can be changed by +/- 20 CAD to give same results, if we go further there is drop in performance. -
Model NOx, Soot, CO and Unburnt Hydrocarbons in CHEMKIN
-
• Use Zeldovich mechanism to find NOx production and modified Hiroyasu mechanism for soot.
• Report a plot of the temperature (1200 - 3000K) vs equivalence ratio (0.25 – 3.0), showing superimposed contours of soot, NOx, UHC and CO as predicted by CHEMKIN, along with a brief discussion on best conditions to get minimum emissions and how to achieve them.
• Maximum NOx occurs at equivalence ratio of 0.75/1 at high temperatures, maximum soot occurs at equivalence ration of 1.5/1.75 and…• Use Zeldovich mechanism to find NOx production and modified Hiroyasu mechanism for soot.

Model the Vaporization of a liquid fuel droplet in air.
-
• Develop a new finite thermal conductivity/mass diffusivity model for heat and mass transfer in MATLAB.
• Model and determine the vaporization of n-pentane and a blend of n-pentane (80%) and ethanol (20%) to help understand combustion characteristics of the fuel and relate them to engine parameters like ignition delay, flame speeds, etc.
