Clarity in financial titles matters — for investors, for trust and for the profession.  That’s why CFP Board joined the Financial Planning Association (FPA) and NAPFA - National Association of Personal Financial Advisors in submitting a joint comment letter to NASAA supporting revisions to its model rule on unethical practices. These adopted changes help prevent misuse of titles like “advisor” and extend key investor protections from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Regulation Best Interest (Reg BI) to the state level. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗦𝗨𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝘅𝗲𝗱. You have a few months to prevent this! I work with many families who sell their RSUs upon vesting and don't realize their custodian (Schwab, Fidelity, etc.) doesn't always report the correct cost basis on their 1099-B. Here's how it happens: You have 100 shares of XYZ vest on February 15, 2025 at $200/share. You immediately sell to diversify. (100 shares × $200) = $20,000 in income, already taxed on your W-2. Your cost basis should be $200/share because you were taxed on that amount at vesting. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺:  Your 1099-B comes in and reports your basis as $0. Now that same $20,000 shows as taxable again on your tax return. I get it. Early in my career, I rushed through TurboTax as fast as possible. "What's my refund?" (Spoiler: never got one.) You're busy. Spending hours combing through tax documents isn't realistic. But this mistake is costly. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗗𝗜𝗬𝗲𝗿: Double-check your RSU cost basis before filing. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿:  Make sure they're actually reviewing this. Yes, many advisors just throw you in a few mutual funds, meet once a year, and charge an arm and a leg. This is financial planning.

Have you heard? The Certified Private Wealth Advisor® (CPWA®) certification has been updated. In response to industry shifts and the increasing complexity of private wealth management, the CPWA Body of Knowledge has been adjusted to reflect the latest professional competencies required of advisors. One example of these refinements is the Human Dynamics domain — covering Ethics, Behavioral Finance and Investor Psychology, and Family Dynamics — which has increased from 13% of the examination to 18%, emphasizing the critical role of psychological and emotional factors in wealth planning. Modifications such as these happen regularly, approximately every four to five years. They are the result of the Institute’s continual implementation of world-class job task analyses, which study and systematically survey practicing professionals about the tasks, required abilities, and relevant knowledge necessary for professional investment management analysts to perform their job.
