Cathal Flanagan shared thisI always thought about the backward moving blocks described in the Stan Schneider article in terms of wave compressions and rarefactions. Upon reflection, the physical analogy of sound and phantom traffic blocks may not be so good. The vision of technology enabled through the widespread use of Autonomous Vehicles will change many lives for the better.Cathal Flanagan shared thisI hate traffic. California's current solution is to double down on carpool lanes, turning them into toll lanes. Is this some perverse plan to make money from pain? Carpool lanes didn't work. They never will. Toll lanes won't work, either. These pursue the wrong fundamental goal. The goal should be to reduce traffic, not profit from pain, further separate haves from have-nots, or encourage electric vehicles. The goal should be to keep all lanes moving. There should be no "special" lanes that move faster. If you stop and think about it, it's obvious. Why waste the carrying capacity of 3 out of 4 lanes? But it seems impossible. Spending hours and hours in a car is part of city life. Right? Traffic will come back after Covid. Right? Congestion is the natural result of too many cars. Right? Death, taxes, and traffic. Right? WRONG! With a little bit of technology, we can eliminate traffic for good. How? See my article in ReadWrite: https://lnkd.in/gHF-TYm #technology #autonomousvehicles #transportation

Cathal Flanagan liked thisCathal Flanagan liked thisFrom the factory to the customer – safely delivered and ready for operation. 🚛 Pott’s brewery recently took delivery of a new KHS Innoclean SE. Our high-performance bottle washing machine sanitizes returnable glass and PET containers at an output of up to 170,000 bph. It’s energy efficient, gentle on materials and individually configurable. 💡 What lots of people don’t see, however, is that before a machine goes into operation, it first has to arrive at its destination. Together with our haulage partners, we make sure that large systems also find their way to the customer safely and reliably – worldwide. 🙌 For a new line doesn’t start with commissioning but with the first step: safe delivery. #KHS #YourReliablePartner #Potts #Innoclean #BottleWashing #BeverageIndustry #EngineeredWithHeart

Cathal Flanagan liked thisA very proud family moment. This week, my sister and her daughter made history at Aer Lingus by becoming the airline’s first mother–daughter flight deck crew, flying together as Captain and First Officer. Watching one generation inspire the next, and then share the flight deck together, is something truly special. Their hard work, commitment, and love of flying have brought them to this remarkable moment. May this inspire many more young women and anyone with a dream, to aim high. If you see it, you can do it!!!Cathal Flanagan liked thisA rare and special occurrence this week... ☘️✈️ Captain and Co-Pilot = Mother and Daughter. The first time in Aer Lingus history. Huge congratulations to Sonya and Lara on a truly remarkable achievement. 💚

Cathal Flanagan liked thisCathal Flanagan liked thisTwenty-five years is a long time. It had been that long since I last walked the campus of Queen's University Belfast. It was good to be back. In that earlier life, every day on my way into the chemistry building I walked past the statue of Lord Kelvin. As a young scientist, it was hard not to wonder what he might think of what I was going to do with my life. Back then, I wasn't sure. So it was a nice full-circle moment on Saturday to catch up with an old friend and fill him in on the last twenty-five years. Of course, Belfast being Belfast, it was raining. Some things never change. The coffee shop across the street, on the other hand, has. Zinc Cafe is gone, and Bunsen Burgers has arrived. The Botanic Inn, thankfully, is still there. #Chemistry #Belfast #QUB

Cathal Flanagan liked thisCathal Flanagan liked thisWe’ve just finished our Future Makers employee engagement sessions in Boston Scientific Galway attended by more than 3000 colleagues, and I’m proud of how the week landed. Yes, we covered business updates and priorities, but what really stood out to me was the people side. We have a huge talent base across our campus, and we're building the right culture to support our future. A big thank you to everyone who contributed, especially those who shared personal experiences, including a colleague who told us about her own remarkable experience of having a biliary stent implanted and years later finding herself working on the very production line that manufactures that product. It gave us all an important reminder of why our work each day to bring lifesaving products to market matters so much for our patients and their families. This week was a good reminder that our culture isn’t something separate from results. It’s how we get results, and how we keep improving, together. Manufacturing leaders don't just run plants. They build value. I joined Joe Sullivan on The Manufacturing Executive to talk about what it really takes to build a buyer-ready manufacturing business, from leadership depth and margin discipline to reducing owner dependence long before a transaction is on the table. This episode is especially relevant for manufacturing CEOs focused on: • Predictable performance and EBITDA • Strong leadership beyond the founder • Long-term optionality, not just short-term results If you want to run your business like a true asset, this conversation is worth your time. Manufacturing margins leak through manual gaps. Between measurement errors and disconnected data, the cost of "getting it right" skydives. If your design and production teams aren't perfectly synced, you're essentially paying for the same job twice. On Wednesday, March 25 (11:00 AM ET | 3:00 PM GMT), Bryce Nord will be cutting through the AI hype to focus on one thing: stopping manual rework and catching errors before they ever hit the shop floor. See how to plug the leaks here: https://ow.ly/f8Pv50YrBlR Can’t make it? Register anyway and I’ll send you the recording!

Your production process may be working. The question is how much extra effort it takes to keep it that way. IRIS helps manufacturers identify where production processes rely on extra effort to compensate for missing visibility, disconnected information, or inconsistent execution. Together, we help teams build a stronger foundation for continuous improvement and more predictable performance. Turn manufacturing complexity into controlled performance. Take a closer look at what may be slowing your performance at https://okt.to/vMiX9O

Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VA/VE) plays a practical role in helping manufacturers meet performance, cost, and production goals. When approached early and collaboratively, VA/VE can improve part function, simplify tooling, and reduce long-term program risk. Through deep draw, fineblanking, progressive stamping, and in-house tooling, Jagemann Stamping works alongside customers to evaluate materials, geometries, and processes with a focus on what matters most to each program. Contact us to discuss how a VA/VE approach can support your goals: https://lnkd.in/grKz7Sb5 #JagemannStamping #MetalStamping #ValueEngineering #ValueAnalysis #DeepDraw #Fineblanking

Most manufacturing strategies don’t fail on the drawing board. They fail on the production floor. Ideas get diluted in handoffs. Assumptions replace reality. Execution breaks where engineering and operations stop talking. The real advantage? Designing solutions that translate to impactful results on the floor, beyond the spreadsheets and presentations. Execution isn’t a phase after strategy. It is part of the strategy. Where does execution usually break down in your operations? #DSIexcellence #ManufacturingExecution #IndustrialEngineering #OperationalExcellence #EngineeringLeadership

In my experience leading and consulting in manufacturing I've seen a dangerous, costly pattern emerge, often at the executive level: The reliance on surface-level fixes. We see a drop in OEE, a rise in defects, or a dip in profits, and the default response is often equivalent to hitting the reset button: restructuring, budget cuts, or simply waiting to "see what happens". Effective problem-solving requires a structured approach. We must always demand data, curiosity, and a structured approach—in the factory and in the boardroom. #ExecutiveLeadership #EngineeringSolutions #QualityManagement #ProblemSolving #BlackhawkConsultantGroup

Why Your Factory Needs "Sprints" Not Just Schedules: The Case for Agile Manufacturing. By [Your Name], Principal at Vector Process Advisors If you run a manufacturing plant in 2026, you know the "Golden Age of Stability" is over. For decades, we relied on the Waterfall model (even if we didn't call it that). We forecasted demand a year out, bought materials in bulk, and set the production schedule in stone. This works perfectly—if nothing changes. But today? A supplier misses a shipment. A customer changes specs last minute. A machine goes down. When you try to apply a rigid Waterfall schedule to a volatile supply chain, you get chaos. You get high WIP (Work in Progress), expedited shipping fees, and frustrated floor managers. There is a better way. It’s time to bring Agile to the shop floor. What is Agile Manufacturing? Agile isn't just for software developers in Silicon Valley. At its core, Agile is about shortening the feedback loop. In a traditional "Waterfall" factory, we might plan a 6-month initiative to reduce scrap. We spend 2 months planning, 2 months training, and 2 months executing. By the time we finish, the product mix has changed. In an Agile factory, we operate in 2-Week Sprints. How "The Sprint" Works in Production Instead of a massive overhaul, we ask: "What is the smallest valuable improvement we can ship in the next 10 business days?" -Week 1 (Planning): The team identifies one specific bottleneck (e.g., "Changeover time on Line 3 is drifting up"). -Week 2 (Execution): We don't write a 50-page SOP. We run a rapid experiment. We tape off the floor. We move the tool cart. We test it. -Friday (Review): Did it work? If yes, keep it. If no, revert it. This is the MVP (Minimum Viable Process) approach. It allows you to solve problems in real-time rather than waiting for the "perfect" solution. 3 Ways to Start Being Agile Today (Without Buying Software) You don't need a new ERP system to start this. You need a mindset shift. 1. The Morning Stand-Up: Replace the weekly 1-hour status meeting with a daily 15-minute standing meeting on the floor. Ask three questions: What did we build yesterday? What are we building today? What is blocking us? 2. Visual Backlogs: Stop keeping improvement ideas in a spreadsheet on the Plant Manager’s computer. Put a whiteboard on the floor. Let operators use sticky notes to add problems to the "Backlog." 3. Kill the "Big Bang" Launch: Stop trying to fix the whole factory at once. Pick one cell. Fix it fast. Learn. Repeat. The Vector Approach At Vector Process Advisors, we believe the future of manufacturing belongs to the Hybrids. We combine the statistical discipline of Lean Six Sigma (to ensure quality) with the speed and flexibility of Agile (to ensure adaptability). Don't let your process become a relic. If you want to see how an Agile Sprint could reduce your lead times, let's talk

Most PE-backed manufacturers still hire executives based on pattern recognition: ✔️ “They’ve done this before.” ✔️ “They’ve seen this movie.” But what if the movie has changed? In today’s manufacturing environment—compressed timelines, fragile supply chains, continuous digital change—familiar playbooks can quietly become liabilities. The question isn’t whether an executive has experience, but how they apply it when conditions no longer match the past. This week, we’re unpacking why executive hiring assumptions that worked for years may be holding manufacturers back, and what needs to change in 2026. 🔎 For related context, revisit how leadership models are already shifting in manufacturing: https://lnkd.in/efxbz6w6 #PostPlaybookLeadership #ManufacturingExecutives #PEValueCreation #ExecutiveRecruiting2026 #KerstenTalentCapital
