My reaction is mixed: ✅ I’m glad a company is taking responsibility for critical infrastructure. ⚠️ But it would be better if infrastructure like this wasn’t owned by any one company. ❗ This should have been “in” WordPress.org years ago. WPackagist became foundational because WordPress.org never shipped a first‑class Composer registry. The community filled the gap, and now a private company owns a critical pillar. I don’t think this is about WP Engine specifically, in fact they should be lauded for putting their shoulders underneath this load. The real issue is governance and sustainability of core infrastructure in open ecosystems. We should celebrate the acquisition, and then do the harder work: • Make a neutral, community‑owned package registry a priority. • Fund & govern it properly. If that sounds like FAIR to you, well... That's because that's a very similar (if not: the same) problem. We should adopt that mindset for everything that becomes “critical path” If we want WordPress to stay durable, we have to stop treating infra as an afterthought.

Yet, paradoxically, the value of a line of code has never been lower. AI didn't just learn from the open source commons; it is now disrupting the very concept of code copyright. If a machine can rebuild your tool's functionality from scratch in seconds, your license is no longer your moat. So, where does the value go? It moves upstream. We are seeing the Rise of the Architect. In my latest blog post, I explore why the "execution" of code is becoming a commodity and why the new competitive edge lies in three specific areas: - Intent: Defining the "Why". - Direction: Steering the solution. - Logic: The structural "How". I also look at why leaders like Drupal founder Dries Buytaert shared his "Adaptable Modules", code as a blueprint rather than a finished product. The reality for 2025 and beyond is simple: you can’t compete on the bricks anymore. You have to compete on vision. Link to my full post in the first comment.

🤠 Carrie Dils reposted this🤠 Carrie Dils reposted thisFAIR and Patchstack just took a big step forward for WordPress security 🔐 At CloudFest USA last week, FAIR and Patchstack introduced the first iteration of the FAIR Software Security Assistant - an open-source tool aimed at bringing automated vulnerability screening and policy enforcement into the FAIR software supply chain. The idea originally came from a conversation earlier this year between Patchstack’s Elliot Taylor and FAIR contributors Ryan McCue and John Blackbourn, exploring how Patchstack could become the security node within FAIR. That early chat has now turned into a working prototype. The project was built during the invite-only CloudFest USA Hackathon on 4 November, co-led by Elliot Taylor, 🤠 Carrie Dils, and Brent Toderash, with support from Alain Schlesser What the team produced ✅ - Repository monitoring - Real-time vulnerability analysis - A basic risk-based policy engine - An initial dashboard for visibility and approvals There is more planned too - compliance reporting, advanced policy controls, hosting integration guides, containerised deployment, and a workflow for responsible disclosure. For anyone maintaining large numbers of WordPress sites, internal repositories, or working in security-sensitive environments, this is a meaningful development. A verifiable security gate for plugins and themes has been missing for a long time. As a WordPress development agency working with agencies and enterprise teams, PIE Code will be following the project closely. Our team is working to make FAIR (Federated and Independent Repositories - fair.pm) a reality for the TYPO3 ecosystem, and yesterday we hit some real milestones while uncovering some interesting challenges along the way. What we shipped The team dug deep into the TYPO3 Extension Manager and started connecting it to the new AspireCloud API. Along the way, we identified some necessary refactoring in TYPO3 Core itself: the kind of discovery that only happens when you actually start building. On the AspireCloud side, we got a PR merged that allows to serve TYPO3 packages, and Joost de Valk found time for a side quest: a redesign proposal for TYPO3's extension repository. We also started the work needed to display TYPO3 packages on fair.pm, a key step toward making TYPO3 packages truly discoverable, and set up dedicated hackathon accounts on X and Bluesky to share progress as we go. On the decentralised identity front, we researched how DIDs (Decentralised Identifiers) can be used to uniquely and verifiably identify TYPO3 extensions. We explored different DID methods, thought through key recovery scenarios for developers who lose their credentials, and mapped out a path forward: an intermediate did:web approach for existing packages on extensions.typo3.org, moving toward did:plc as the long-term solution.
