BNSF Railway announced the creation of a new team focused on single carload growth. The First Mile/Last Mile team, comprised of 13 people, combines the Class I railroad’s Shortline Development and Industrial Products Business Development teams. On January 1, 2026, Section 301 tariffs will go into effect on products from Nicaragua. The tariff will be implemented incrementally and will be set to 0% on January 1, 2026, increasing to 10% on January 1, 2027, then increasing again to 15% on January 1, 2028. The tariff will stack with others, including the current 18% Reciprocal Tariff.  Goods that originate under the Dominican Republic-Central America-United States Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) will be exempted from the action. The Office of the United States Trade Representative determined that Nicaragua’s acts, policies and practices are unreasonable and referenced practices related to the abuses of labor rights, abuses of human rights, and dismantling of the rule of law.

Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern announced a deal that would create the first direct transcontinental railroad linking the U.S. East and West coasts. Under the agreement, the plan is to merge certain operations, allowing freight to move seamlessly from ports in California right through to Atlantic destinations without changing trains. The goal is to improve rail efficiency, reduce shipping times, and boost competitiveness against trucking. But the proposed merger is drawing scrutiny from regulators and industry groups that are concerned about reduced competition and potential job cuts. Not to mention labor unions, which are worried about diminished service and higher costs.
