In the SF Sacramento area, which owners are specifically asking for lean construction? Rather than make you guess incorrectly, I will share some insights from my own experience. 1. Sutter Health - Sutter has been on their lean journey since 2005. Their current leadership includes Digby Christian, Panos Lampsas, Tom Martin, Callahan Lieb, and more. 2. UCSF Health - UCSF started their lean journey under Michael Bade and Stuart Eckblad, FAIA, NAC. The current leadership includes James Pease, Scott Muxen, Shawn Mazzeo, Michelle Malone, MPA, and more. 3. San Francisco International Airport - SFO started their lean journey in 2019 under Geoffrey Neuymr leadership. Current leadership include Judi Mosqueda, Derrick Homer, PMP, Ryan Louie, and a few others. They are actively guided by Paulo Napolitano. Paulo has been helping SFO since 2019 on their award winning Terminal 1 Harvey Milk project. 4. UC Davis Health - UC Davis is relatively new to lean. Current leadership include Tom Van Pelt, Douglas Whiteaker, and Timothy Tsukamoto. They have an ambitious capital program coming and will be looking to incorporate more lean and design into their future projects. 5. Genentech - Genentech’s lean journey is centered on Target Value Delivery. Michael Greening and Malvin Whang AIA, CASp, LEED AP current lead their lean construction efforts on their capital projects. 6. Kaiser Permanente - Kaiser Northern California lean journey is centered on Takt and Last Planner for MOBs and new hospital. Pete Novaresi, Robin Haller, MSc, CCM, DBIA, PSP, CCP, PMP, LEED AP BDC, and Allen Hullinger, MHPA, CSPO are driving lean training and adoption for Kaiser. As you can see. Many of the major owners in the Bay Area are well committed to lean design and construction. Most top 10 general contractors in the Bay Area cannot survive without Sutter, UCSF, SFO, UC Davis, Genentech, or Kaiser as their clients. The benefits of lean construction has been so great on data center projects that I am seeing Prologis, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Apple joining the bandwagon as well. There are some rumors that Stanford Health Care under Rick Millitello and Matthew Szeto are also exploring lean construction. Those are just rumors and speculations at the moment. Pretty much everyone important is on the bandwagon. And if you aren’t in it, you won’t be in the market for very long. If you are responsible for P&L and don’t know what your customers are asking for, you will not be at your job for very long. If you are responsible for P&L and don’t know specifically how to apply lean design and construction, you will not be at your job for very long. The market is changing rapidly. If you don’t keep up and are adaptive to the changing project delivery environment, you will go extinct like the Dodo.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a modernized zoning ordinance that expands housing flexibility, streamlines processes, and updates guidance for emerging technologies like data centers. This months-long effort included input from more than 160 stakeholders and hundreds of residents. The updated ordinance allows for multiple accessory dwelling units and short-term rentals in accordance with state law, removes unnecessary steps for smaller multi-family projects, speeds up Temporary Use Permit processing, clarifies definitions for new technologies, and eliminates outdated restrictions across several zoning districts. It also consolidates land-use categories and removes more than 50 pages of outdated rules to make the document easier to use.
