SFTP has been the status quo in the retirement space for decades, but new compliance rules now demand real-time data access. Nasrin Mazooji, COO at Ubiquity Retirement + Savings, on why the retirement industry is shifting from SFTP to API connections: "SFTP is generally fine when payroll files are simple, predictable, and quarterly corrections are acceptable. But we almost need data in real time to manage daily entry, new employees entering, making benefit elections every day, every hour." The operational burden was substantial: Ubiquity spent thousands of hours annually on manual exception management. APIs changed the equation. Real-time data exchange establishes a source of truth through continuous communication between systems, not batch file transfers that require manual intervention. From Scrutiny to Strategy: Key Takeaways from Our ACAMS BaaS Regulatory Panel Yesterday at ACAMS in sunny Hollywood, Florida🌴, I had the privilege of moderating an exceptional panel exploring the regulatory landscape of Banking as a Service with industry leaders Mayra De La Garza, MBA, CAMS (epay), Howard R. Fields (Mastercard), and Kendall Howell (Davis Polk). The timing couldn't be more critical. Our discussion revealed that while BaaS models create tremendous innovation opportunities, they've triggered unprecedented regulatory attention over the past 12 months. Four key insights emerged: 1️⃣ Innovation that serves consumers: We explored tangible examples of how fintech platforms fundamentally transform financial services accessibility. Our panelists emphasized that continued technology evolution will deliver better products into the hands of users, despite regulatory challenges. The consumer benefit must remain our north star. 2️⃣ Technology as the backbone of compliance: We discussed how advanced monitoring solutions are no longer optional but essential for effectively managing third-party risk. The team highlighted that technology must evolve from reactive to predictive to stay ahead of compliance challenges. 3️⃣ Strategic partnerships over transactions: The panel emphasized that successful BaaS relationships require deep integration of compliance frameworks between banks and fintechs. The days of arm's-length partnerships are over - regulatory expectations demand collaborative risk management. 4️⃣ Navigating the political landscape: Kendall and Howard provided crucial insights on the regulatory environment, explaining that existing regulations remain firmly in place despite the current deregulatory climate. Banks and fintechs must maintain robust third-party risk management programs regardless of political shifts. The consensus was clear: compliance cannot take a backseat while waiting for potential regulatory changes. The audience poll revealed that most organizations are only "moderately prepared" for emerging regulatory scrutiny, with third-party risk management as the greatest compliance challenge.
